The fashion at the time was for young women over 16 to wear their hair up. However, in this case the girls are wearing hats, which makes it look like the younger two are also wearing their hair up even though they weren't of age yet.

Tell me if I'm wrong....but this picture is of a friend of Anna V. right? I've seen so many people say its one of the romanovs! someone on flicker even said it was Alexandra with Alexei and Anastasia! (that I know is not true!)

oh i think they would look really pretty if they kept thier hair down...but thats probally becuase of todays standards though

Yes, they do look very pretty with their hair down but it can't have been very comfortable. I always go insane when I have my hair down and my hair is much shorter than OTMA's wonderful hair.

Agree i go insane too and always touching it... my hair is long almost like Olishka's when she was 15 but little short from her... and because i'm russian i wear it up with the typical russian style ( like Olga wear it ) it's very comfortable at home and i prefer outside to be on "horse tail" ....

Yes, it is true, and she was not the only one.  Alexei, and Anastasia had a gap too. Adn I THINK I´ve seen Olga having a gap too somewhere... I´ll try to find that picture.

This closeup of Maria from that snapshot makes it appear as though her gap was quite prominent:


The lighting is probably accentuating it, but still -- hard to miss.
