“Grand Duchess Olga was a slender girl of moderate height, finely proportioned and wonderfully feminine. All her movements are of soft and subtle grace. Her gaze, quick and timid, and her smile, a fleeting but charming one, gives a spellbinding feeling. But the most unforgettable were her eyes of blue, turquoise colors of the Urals, gently burning and radiantly shining.”

~from Simeon Pavlovich Pavlov’s memoirs
(I’ve had them translated from Russian a year ago, and I forgot to copy the link for it : (

Well, Simeon Pavlovich. whoever he may have been, was both charmed and spellbound himself, it seems. A not uncommon reaction to Olga.

I second that! What a lovely description of a young lady who was, of course, perfectly deserving of such effusive praise. We know so much about the family history and have seen so many photographs, video footage, etc, that we often feel like we knew them personally. But look at Simeon's wonderful description of Olga Nikolaevna's eyes! That's something special that you had to be there to see!

If only I can find the link for his memoirs again, maybe someone who knows Russian can help us accurately translate. He related several experiences that show Olga was so kind to him and other soldiers. I want to 'edit' them but I can't fully understand the roughly translated sentences by Google :(  They show how much he adored her. He even mentioned her name more than Tatiana's.

Let me know if you find it, Shandroise. I can volunteer my Russian language skills.

I always find it so interesting to look back and see how many people always described Tatiana as being the only great beauty out of the four sisters. While she certainly was gorgeous and had exotic looks when compared to OMA, I think they were all exceptionally gorgeous. Olga was a very beautiful child and grew into a sweet and graceful woman. Maria had the most angelic face I have ever seen and she blossomed into a rose. Anastasia was an adorable child, had a couple awkward years in between her childhood and adolescence, but the last pictures we have of her show that she herself was turning into quite the looker like her mother, who she looked like so much. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, but it is always funny to look back and see how our definitions of beauty have changed over time.

Couldn't agree more Kassy. I too have noticed how our perceptions of beauty have changed through the years - physical that is. Yes I get that Tatiana had a sort of timeless beauty to her but they were all pretty stunning to look at. I've always gotten a kick out of how their looks seem to match their personalities too. Like if I had learned all about them without seeing any pictures I'd still know exactly who was who once photographs were presented.

Yes yes yes! :D You can tell many things about them just by looking at their photographs. Anastasia was of course the easiest to tell because of all her silly pictures, but you could see the Tatiana was the favorite companion of their mother as she was with her in so many pictures. I can't say enough just how grateful I am to have these private collections. It makes me feel so much closer to them.

Agreed totally. Photographs can give away personalities in a way, I suppose....

Nice observation there , edubs, in your last two sentences. I hadn't thought of or noticed that before. Or ,maybe I took it for granted, the (now) obvious  match between their looks and their inner selves and their special individual qualities

Click here to read Queen Victoria's journal entry with the news of Olga's birth.
May anybody transcribe the journal entry of QV here? I can't access it :(
Thanks very much in advance ^^

A very pretty picture of Olga and Tatiana from TatianaZ
It's 101 years since this picture has been taken.
Posting it here because I like to comment on the gap between her teeth (although an insignificant thing).
In my opinion, it's as wide as Maria's.
Nevertheless, she looks very lovely and perfect like what wakas said in the Rare Pics thread ^^

~(from a person who has the same teeth condition) : )

Gaps in teeth can be endearing. Back then it was probably considered a huge imperfection and today there are actresses and models who are remembered because of a trademark gap.
