Royal Gatherings: Who is in the Picture, Volume 1: 1859-1914
« on: November 23, 2012, 02:40:02 PM »
ROYAL GATHERINGS was inspired by an Eurohistory Magazine section, What's In a Photo, that has proven to be the publication's most popular feature. Co-authored by Ilana D. Miller and Arturo E. Beéche, it promises to be an excellent addition to Eurohistory's growing library of unique titles.

Ranging from the overthrow of King Francesco II of the Two Sicilies in 1859 to the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria-Este in 1914, ROYAL GATHERINGS examines 38 group photos taken at various royalty get-togethers between those years. Each of the thirty-eight chapters focuses on one particular gathering. In each gathering the authors provided vignettes, or what Prince Michael of Greece calls "la petite histoire," on each of the royal personages featured in the chosen photograph.

Besides written stories on each of the royalties present in any of the given group photos, the authors have also included many individual photos to accompany the text. The book contains more than 250 photos, as well as an extensive family tree that  includes most of the royalties discussed in the book. ROYAL GATHERINGS is 172-long glossy pages, hardbound.

Is Chapter XV – The Princes of Battenberg at Osborne House  the one of the 4 brothers at Henry's wedding? I bought an old magazine which had one of the 4 of them together then. They were some fine looking men! :)

I have always thought the idea of a book like this was a good one--I had even started putting one together a few years ago which got derailed like so many of my book ideas. I love photos of royal gatherings. The Illustrated London News or the Sphere did a multipage article on the group wedding photos at Coburg. They talked to the photographer and got some of the 'behind the scenes' gossip from him on setting up the photo, etc...That's what had put the seed in my mind. Also reading about the maneuverings behind some of the large portraits painted by Tuxen and Finch.

I've always loved the feature in your magazine the most and have the book sitting in my amazon cart now for Christmas. :)

I can't wait to see all the photos. The one from Gustav Adolf's baptism sounds intriguing.

This book and Definitely Royal are the 2 books I'm looking forward to most getting for Christmas. Can't wait for the next one! It sounds like you are really kicking the publishing up in terms of the number of books you come out with. Bring on the royal photo books! : D

Well, I cracked early and bought my own Christmas presents for Bob to get me! :) (At least some of them). I ordered this book plus some other royal books. I figure I'll read it when it gets here then let him wrap it up for Christmas day. ;)

Hope you will enjoy... the text is more essay than factual (although, of course, we've stuck to the facts), but it's our unique "take".  Again, hope you'll love the book as more volumes are planned, which reminds me, I better get writing!!!!!!!!!
So long and thanks for all the fish

There is a bit of momentum and excitement building around the book. MAJESTY chose to carry it and I believe they will make it the BOOK of the Month February 2013. Other sellers in Europe have signed ont to sell it as well.

Obviously in the USA it can be obtained through us at eurohistory.com and through AMAZON. It will also list this weekend at AMAZON.co.uk

It is always exciting to wait the reaction that readers have to one of our books!

I received some of my books from Marlene today but I'm still waiting for RG--that's from Ilana. It's been shipped so...the agony of the wait!

What other books do you have in the pipeline, Art? You mentioned increasing the output. Very exciting.

Really good idea for a book and I'm sure it's very well done!

You mention something about more volumes being in the works...I imagine the date range will overlap or will this be a continuation and pick up from where your timeline leaves off here in 1914? Anything on the funeral of King Edward VII from
1910? A dizzying array and who's who of royal and other dignitaries having gathered to pay their respects.
Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right...

And as for 2013 projects...

Sabrina and Kassandra Pollock have written a fabulous book titled The Sisters from Luxembourg. It is a group biography of the six daughters of Grand Duke Guillaume.

Eurohistory will also publish an English-language version of Russia and Europe – Dynastic Ties – I am working on this book right now. We have scheduled to be the forst for 2013.

I also have continued writing chapters of THE GOTHA, Volume 2: The German Empire (Part 1). This will come out in 2013.

Ilana and I will be working on the Royal Gathering Series Volumes 2 & 3.

An ambitious printing schedule no doubt...however it will keep me an at-home dad and that is something I relish!

It is...very exciting indeed.

We have received about a dozen book proposals and/or manuscripts for publication over the next two years. One wishes one could publish a book every month ... alas one has limitations, both in human power and financial backing needed to pay for the printing of one book a month.

Perhaps I should finally play the Lotto... :-)

But in all seriousness ... we have some truly amazing projects in our hands and I am very dedicated to getting them to print. It might keep me from returning to academia for a while, but I do like the idea of working from my home office. It definitely has its benefits, plus I get to be a stay-at-home parent, and that is something I love.
