You seem to do very good work Arturo.

Quote
I think that we, the English-speaking readership, pay far too much attention to the Romanovs, English, Scandinavians, Greeks and Prussians

Interesting. I guess I can both support and challenge this statement. On one hand it's a terrific thing that you bring those fascinating stories of "lesser known" royals back to life. It's important that someone puts forth the time and energy and I commend 'Euro History' on this.

On the other hand the more well known royal families play an essential role as catalysts for the subject. This particular website that's essentially dedicated to the Romanovs, above all else, being a good example of that. Does the overwhelming popularity of the Romanovs and Windsors, etc, draw attention away from other impressive royal lineages? Or do they help to bring many more royalty fanatics on board that otherwise would never take the time to dig a little deeper? I don't know about you, but I'm going with the latter!

None of this is intended to sound critical by the way and, as mentioned above, I admire your passion and dedication to the subject...keep up the good work!

Once in a while you get shown the light, in the strangest of places if you look at it right...

Arturo, what do you think are the less popular houses? And why do you think that those houses are not that popular?
I'm also interested about the opinions from others about the above question.

I also hope that one day a serie of books will appear about the lesser know Royals. I think about somekind of Rosvall book with short biographies about Royals about we don't know  less or nothing. I don't share for example not the opinion of edubs31 that we know far to much about the Prussians. An example, what do we know about the daughter-in-law of The Kaiser?
And what do we know about the Badens? Wieds, Ysenburgs, Nassau-Weilburgs, Nassau-Dessaus, the Bulgarians, Saxe-Altenburgs?

Booksellers van Hoogstraten should be receiving copies of Royal Gatherings any day now, as should Librairie Galignani and AMAZON.co.uk

I think that Queen Victoria's immediate family always has interest. The Romanovs, especially NAOTMAA, have the glamour and tragedy associated with them--not to mention the decades-long mystery first of the missing bodies and then the Anna Anderson mystery that kept it alive. Robert Massie's book helped solidify their place in the imagination of millions. Kaiser Wilhelm II is a larger-than-life figure who is so closely intertwined with the tragedy of WW1. Apart from these larger-than-life figures, and those like Marie of Romania, most royals have fallen by the wayside unless tangentially related to the above as with Vicky. There always has to be some 'hook' to draw people in and separate them from the pack.

As mentioned, the AP forum was founded to commemorate and celebrate the Romanovs. A welcome side effect of this has been the expansion of the Forum, even since I've been here, to include almost every royal family or member, no matter how obscure. This has brought a lot of attention to those royals who didn't leave some lasting mark on history but led interesting lives nonetheless.

I think a book like Royal Gatherings walks the line very well. They certainly have pictures in there of royals we know much about but along the way there are fascinating tidbits about those who may not be as widely known, even to those of us who haunt the AP Forum. :)  It has the requisite hook but enlightens you about others along the way. I think Romanov Autumn was so delightful and successful for the same reason. Maybe these lives weren't all as glamorous or tragic or beautiful or epic and maybe they couldn't sustain their own full-length books but there are very interesting in their own right and deserve at least some mention. You can also see Robert Golden's books here to--they contain mention of more well-known royals such as Queen Mary but mostly focus on those tangential members.

All this is just my humble opinon though. :)

As for the mentioned Rosvall books, I posted some about those upcoming books in the Upcoming Books for 2013 thread stickied at the top of this sub-forum.

In ROYAL GATHERINGS Ilana and I tried to mix up better-known royals with lesser-known ones.

I personally like finding out more information about the lesser-known ones...somehow in English it is rather difficult to find books outside the English-Hesse-Prussia-Greek-Danish axis. Luckily, since I can read six languages (Spanish, English, French, Italian, Portuguese and fair amount of German), I have in my library tons of non-English language books on various royals. I think that the royal books now surpass 3500 different titles I have here. In fact, I just ran out of space in the new library built in the new addition to the house and had to take a space at our local Storage Space company. I guess this is a good problem to have!

How wonderful to be in a position to build yourself a new library, even if the books have now overflowed it! I have decided that the time has come to get some new bookshelves, as the piles of books on my bedroom floor are growing daily, but I'm not sure where I'll find room for them.

I don't kow about the USA, but the royal books I see in Britain are overwlemings about British royalty, the Romanovs, the Hesses through Alexandra and the Hohenzollerns. There is much less published about even the Greeks and the Habsburgs. At the moment, there seems to be an industry or producing scurrilous books about the Queen Mother, for example.

Hi Ann,

I have seen the new and renewed library at Arturo's.  With it's CostaRican blue walls, it is a relaxing place in which to stack and store his miriades of books and work on new publications.

As a matter of fact, I plan to redo my largest bedroom (which is already my library) in CostaRican blue and rearrange my overflowing books too.
I'm sure Arturo knows that I will steal his colour scheme anyway.  He knows me so well!!!

I knew it...that intense look and the mental note taking...you shameless man!

LOL

I have found a way to add three more bookcases giving me enough shelves for another 600 books!

My poor sons and what work awaits them when I am no longer here!

In ROYAL GATHERINGS news...all our European distributors have copies now. All shipments in Europe have been received!!

Amazon shipments depart from here the same day the book is purchased. All AMAZON.CO.UK orders ship the following business day as my super efficient friend Katrina Warne has plenty of copies as well!

Hi Art,

It's very happy news indeed that the book is progressing saleswise and people are happy with it...
I am now half-way through it and have learned so much;  the pictures are grand, and my friends whom I gave copies are very impressed with the photos.  Of course, they are asking me all about everyone, as they are novices to it all - except for Wills & Kate and The Queen.
Unbelievably, one had never even heard of the Kaiser;  I nearly fell off my chair!!!
But, this is just not taught in the schools anymore.  And as I've voiced before, this book should be in the schools and libraries...
Unfortunately, our Minister of Education here is a dolt, so one would waste their time talking to him..

A crying shame but the 'dumbing of America' (Canada too) marches on;  although I think we've done well to slow it a little...

I've been stealthily adding books such as these to our library for the last few years--ast least when we actually get funding! LOL Ilana was kind enough to send us a copy of The Four Graces. I just wish the books were more readily available ala Greg King's or Julia Gelardi's. I was able to obtain them through our vendors but many of Art's books or even Charlotte Zeepvat's, which are so popular here, aren't available through as many vendors. And these lives are so much more interesting than Will and Kate's! :)

Regarding book space, when we do our next military move--after Bob's deployment so Jan 2014--we have to shed about 8,000 lbs to meet our weight allowance. And none of it is coming from my royal book collection, that's for sure! LOL

A letter in The Times yesterday reveals that a British businessman visiting Dortmund thought a statue of Wilhelm I was Wilhelm II!
