Finally I got my grubby little hands on the book at the university library. Thank you Greg for the recommendation. So far I am really enjoying it. I borrowed Volume 2 so I could read about the myths and symbolism and Nicholas II.

The author gives you quite a different perspective on the autocracy and the Russian Empire.

BTW Greg, your book FOTR was also in the library, so I also borrowed it.

It pays to be a university student as I get free reign on the 5 th floor and those 4 long long long rows of bookcases filled with Russian history books. Books I never knew existed!!!

I have died and gone to Russian heaven, though I do have to read and study about heresy and the good old Popes for my real history class tomorrow. I ramble, but hey, I was excited about all those books.

This two volume compilation of Scenarios of Power is excellent. Unfortunately it is fairly expensive to buy together.

There are numerous background details about Imperial Court procedure usually ignored by most authors.

My only complaint is the author's persistant overuse of the term scenario. At times it became annoying.

Yes, i also have to thank Greg exceedingly for his kind recommendation of this book It is indeed rather expensive, but it is such a detailed and well written set. I have only volume two, but it gives so much information on the rituals, and rites of the court of Nicholas with a history of those of his near previous predecessors.
I was especially thrilled by the prints from the album of Nicholas, which had two corresponding toddler-portraits of Nicholas and Alexandra, as of their parents, and then of the two palaces where they were born.

Has anyone had any luck purchasing Volume 1 of Scenario's of Power?  I have tried for over a year to find a copy for sale on the net with no success!  Be sure to check out the section in Volume 2 on Alexander III's funeral.  It was very compelling reading.

Ya can try checking out your library, university or college one. I know the U of C has volume one and it is on my list of books to read during Christmas break.

I have just found the book on the Amazon for *gasp* 1 000 dollars....

Volume 2 is less expensive, going for atbou 100 I think.

I have two questions:

1.)Is the books worth the money? (I mean no book is worth 1000 but you know....)

2.)Will Volume 2 "work" even without Volume 1?

I own only volume 2 — I've never read volume 1. So yes, volume 2 works just fine on its own.

Yes, that's one way to put it — it's a shortened version, combining information from both volumes.

If your primary interest is in Nicholas II, I recommend purchasing only the second volume of the original set. If you have a broader interest in Russian history, this abridgment is a satisfying alternative to the expense of the complete set.
