I think Alexei had some friends, although he was very isolated, and his life was different than that of most people his age. He had hemophiliia, so that made it hard. He was also very young at death, so he did have the chance to have much of a life either way. As for his love life, I don't think he liked any particular girl in more than a ''crush'' way. Whether he would seriously have liked Princess Illeana as he got older is hard to say. They could have married, but he was very young when he met her. Sometimes people can be ''sweet'' in childhood and it never comes to anything later. With my brother, it  was that way. The again, it might have. Alexei, if not were not for his illness seems normal enough, so in his friends and his (brief) love life, I am sure he was normal too.

Wasn't he also arranged to be with the Greek princesses? I have forgotten their names. I'm too lazy to go get the book it said it in, but there's a picture of him with them. I just bought it, actually.Very nice.
He would have made a fine husband and father, I'd bet.
We all must sympathize when it comes to such ideas- that never came true.

Can you scan the pic for us please. if you can. or can you tell us what the name of the book? thanks. Oh the greek girls were - Olga (b.1903), Elisabeth (b.1904) and Marina (b.1906).

o WOW i always thought that those two boys were the Derevenko brothers.

And um just so people wouldn't get confused the names Zhenya and Vasya are pronounced:

Zhenya: je-ni-a

Vasya: va-si-a

As very few of you who frequent these Aleksei Nikolaievich threads speak Russian, I will add some information about these two names. Zhenya is the friendly or short name for Evgeny which in English is translated to Eugene. Vasya is the friendly or short name for Vassily which in English is translated to Basil.

Elizabeth, I believe the last two names you listed were of boys who attended a cadet school.  They were referred to as "cadets" by the Tsar in his letters.  I would imagine that the boys Aleksey assiciated with in his later years would be from a cadet school rather then sons of the sailors of the Standart, or the children of servants and staff members.  Perhaps that was done to esnsure that the boys were from an "appropriate" background and what have you.  All of this is a pure guess, so feel free to correct me.

The sons of the nobility attended the Ecole Corps des Pages in the Vorontsov Palace at Ulitsa Sadovaya across from the Gostiny Dvor in central Saint Petersburg. HSH Prince Vladimir Paley's half brother Alexander von Pistolkors attended this school as did HRH Prince Chakrabongse of Siam. The palace itself was built in the 1750's and is still used as a cadet school for boys.

See this wonderful website by Columbia University with many pictures of the palace and the cadets before the Revolution:

Thank you, David! I've heard of the Ecole Corps des Pages, but never seen a photo of the place.

It might be interesting to know more about this school and what happened to the students after the war...I am reminded of that sad and yet beautiful scene in "Dr. Zhivago" where the young military cadets are dead in the wheat field, amoungst the poppies....They look to be asleep....vey sad....
