Whose Dress Is This?
« on: January 23, 2013, 12:34:22 PM »

The source says it's a 1910's Mme. Brisac belonging to one of the grand duchesses. Has anyone seen it in any pictures? Judging by the waistline I'd guess maybe Olga, but I'm not sure.

If anyone would know, it would be themauveroom--I first saw the image posted on her blog.

That is a beautiful dress. I'm guessing it belongs to Olga or Tatiana.

I would say Tatiana, just because of the length. It's hard to tell though, since there isn't much to compare proportions with. I tried backtracking the photo and comparing it to pictures of the Grand Duchesses, but I'm not 100% sure.

It looks an awful lot like both the 1913 and 1914 formal dresses, but I compared it to photos and it matches neither. Hmm. I agree about being either Olga or Tatiana...too long for the Little Pair, it was wartime by the time they turned 16...perhaps it is from a formal occasion from which no photos exist...or of which photos do exist but are not public..

Oh, nuts. I know I've read about this dress here somewhere, but I can't begin to remember where.

If I recall correctly, this actually may not be one of the GDss dresses. Judging by the skirt length and neckline this is a design for a grown woman, and if indeed it was made in 1910 it can't have been for one of OTMA -- Olga was only 15 that year.

I'll try to search around and see if I can find the post I'm thinking of.

I didn't mean to imply that the dress was from 1910 exactly, just that it was made between 1910-1920.

Found it! The image was originally posted here in May of 2005, by Lisa. According to her post, the dress came from the Alexander Palace in 1917. It is a Brisac, and was made in the 1910's. So it almost certainly belonged to OTMA or Alexandra. To my knowledge nobody has ever definitively identified its owner.

Not sure if anyone is familiar with this Pinterest page, it is dedicated to colour photographs of Romanov clothes, with particular reference to NAOTMAA and Dowager Empress Marie. Really interesting, and lovely to see some of the familiar clothes in colour, how they would have looked!
