Queen Beatrix's abdication is part of a tradition in The Netherlands dating from the reign of her grandmother, Queen Wilhelmina

The Dutch royal family rarely makes the news over here (most recently in connection with Prince Friso's accident), but what we do see shows sensible and hard-working people who are devoted to public service.

Coming from a country whose monarchs don't abdicate, I am a bit in two minds about Queen Beatrix abdicating, but it is clearly in accordance with established practice in the Netherlands, and I hope she enjoys many more healthy years and the new King Willem Alexander has a long and properous reign.

According to an announcement from the Royal Court, The new King and Queen will initially continue to live at Eikenhorst, before moving to Huis ten Bosch Palace once the Queen (then Princess) moves out to her new home, Drakensteyn Castle in Lage Vuursche.

Prior to this announcement, I'd never heard of Drakensteyn Castle before.  I did manage to find a Wikipedia article online about it, and learned that Queen Beatrix acquired the castle in 1959 and had it renovated, then lived there with her husband, Prince Claus, and her three sons from 1963 until their move in 1981 to Huis ten Bosch Palace.  It looks like a quaint property, but seems quite small as home to a former monarch.  Does anyone have any other information or pictures of this property?

Oh but ofcourse. And Drakensteyn is a wellknown name in The Netherlands always referring to the Queen,or soon to be Princess again.
The time the family of Princess, and later Queen Beatrix and Prince Claus spend at Drakensteyn is always recalled by each as the happyest time.

There's this wonderfull link,in spanish...But polyglots as we all are ...grin..:

http://residenciashistoricas.blogspot.com.es/2012/11/castillo-de-drakensteyn.html

It really is a lovely place, and big enough for one.It has undergone extensive renovation works, the castle as well as the grounds
in recent years, and it has always been known that HM after an Abdication would move back to Drakensteyn, her sole private possession,
acquired when in her late teens she wished a home of her own,and since known to all Dutch. What special requirements does a home of
a former Monarch need?A roof and a bed..c'est ca...and some exquisite comfort...grin...And absolute privacy !

Thank you Lucien for the information and the link to that website with such wonderful photos of the castle.  I agree it is lovely, and seems larger and more comfortable from the inside than it appeared in photos from the outside.

For one person it is more than adequate, but I suppose my observation of its modest size is because I automatically wonder what size of household the future Princess Beatrix will maintain in her retirement.  I assume she will still have private secretaries and other support staff to organize her schedule and administer her affairs,  a security detail to guard her, and some amount of domestic staff (cook, housekeeper, driver, gardeners, etc.).  Not to mention, family / friends and official guests visiting her throughout the year.

Just the place! Lovely grounds, and a pleasant interior.

I for one am wishing the new King a long and happy reign, and his mother a long and happy retirement.
