A few weeks ago on the UK Tv network Channel 4 there was a documentary "The Queen's Mother In Law" which delved more deeply into Alice's breakdown. Seems a lady in waiting told a doctor that the Princess had sexual feelings for someone that she could not act on and she thinks that is what lead her to having the breakdown.  Hopefully someone will post the documentary on Youtube, it's must see viewing.

I hope so too. Channel 4 always have great documentaries and no US affiliate to carry them here nor are they available on dvd (like the bbc). So Frustrating !!! :-(

They all looked very blond when little, but grew dark hair when they grew up. Only Philip & Sophie remained blond...

You can see Alice wearing the Greek key tiara that was worn recently by her great granddaughter Zara Philips. I think Zara's mother the Princess Royal inherited that tiara from her father. The Queen never wore it.

Alice didn't inherit it from Philip as he is still living. : )  I believe it was a gift from Philip or maybe a direct request from Alice herself. I'm thinking the former.

GD Ella, I think your mistaking Alice as in Princess Alice of Greece for Anne, the Princess Royal. I think the Greek Key Tiara was a wedding gift for the Duke of Edinburgh to his daughter Anne when she married Mark Phillips in 1973, her grandmother Princess Andrew of Greece (Alice) died in 1969, four years earlier.

I read the Greek Key was given to the Queen (Princess Elizabeth of York) when she married Captain Philip Mountbatten by her husband. Most likely Alice made it a wedding present to her daughter-in-law, but the Queen never wore it. She gave that tiara as a wedding present to her daughter, Princess Anne when she married Mark Philips.

Yes, I typed Alice instead of Anne. I was referring to Eric's comment about Anne inheriting it from Philip and pointing out that Anne couldn't inherit it as Philip was still living. : )  Sorry for the confusion. That's what happens when I try to type quickly at work.

'They all looked very blond when little, but grew dark hair when they grew up. Only Philip & Sophie remained blond...'

Nothing unusual in that. In Britain, adult natural blonds are relatively uncommon (I am one, so I notice others!).

I think Prince Andrew was blond and Alice had light color hair too.

Not always easy to tell in black and white photographs.

In the 1935 picture Andrew looks dark-haired, but it may, or may not, be the effect of the hair oil which most men used in those days.
