footnotes: The Latvian Rifles were Lenin's palace guard during the Civil war period. In the Red army they were reguarded as elite troops and did play a fairly important role in the Russian Civil war. I have read they were well paid in gold. Many returned to Latvia after the civil war. Stalin later on had many of them sent to the Gulag and or shot.
