I think it is referring to the titles of the close family members who held German titles such as the various members of the Battenberg clan, the Teck family, the daughters of Helena, and maybe some others.  These people held German titles but were so closely associated with the British crown, even to the point of calling England home.

I believe at this time that George V also took the English titles from certain German relatives, such as the Coburgs and Hanovers.

Well that was the Royal prerogative of King George V. The Letters Patent issued in 1917 dealt with it all and it quite clear. All members of the British Royal Family relinquished all German titles. British titles were created in their place. The Royal House became Windsor instead of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha.

Yes, it certainly was his prerogative, although I think influenced by the wishes of his subjects and the prevailing general public attitude of the times (anti-German).

Naturally! It is amazing it just didn't happen earlier although the Garter Banner of the German Royals were removed from St.George's Chapel at Windsor Castle very early on in the piece. Anything German was clearly on the nose as the war was seen as a massive betrayal. Queen Victoria would have been horrified at the prospect, a war which should have never occurred.

Somewhere I've read about the reactions of the Mountbattens.

However, I wonder what Queen Mary and the Tecks thought about it?  It seems there might have been others, can anyone remember who they might have been?

I'm sure Queen Mary would have seen it as a protective measure for the monarchy.
