Whoah!!! Could that be 1916 formal photo session? I think that the photo is reverse. Both Maria and Olga look older, as if it was taken even after 1917. (I know it is not, I am just saying that they look older than in 1914 photo session).

Nena - I think they looked "older" because it seems to be actually a sketch rather than a photo - or perhaps it was heavily retouched. It is definitely from/based on the 1916 session.

I read on Romanov Russia Today that the author of the book the photo is from (Four Sisters) is not happy that the photo is online before the book has been released, so perhaps all links to it could be removed for now, as a courtesy to her. But if discussion is still alright, I think it's a sign that more photos were taken in the 1916 session than previously known. I've seen low quality formal photos of Olga, Tatiana and Anastasia but none of Maria. This is the first, and it's so unusual for her to be photographed with Olga instead of Anastasia, mixing things up a little.

Karin - No, Helen Rappaport is most definitely NOT happy that this photo is being shared around the net. According to what I heard, someone found it in one of the online previews of Four Sisters and shared it with everyone else. I did not know (and neither did Romanov Russia Today) at the time that it was from Four Sisters or that it was not meant to be shared. I apologize for posting it here... but I had no idea. If it can be removed, that would be good. Although the point is moot at this point. Colorizations of it are already showing up on deviantArt and it's all over Tumblr. The photo is listed in Four Sisters as being a photo belonging to Rappaport herself, which is astonishing and makes you wonder how she got her hands on such a gem! The book also says that it is indeed 1916.

I've long suspected that there were more to the 1916 formal photos. They're out there, waiting to be shown, I'm sure of it.

I must say, however, as unfortunate as this is - I guarantee some people are more inclined to getting this book now.

I agree with you KarinK. I would expect that Olga would be photographed with Tatiana. I'm sure there are more photos of the 1916 session :) Maybe one day we'll see more of them

It was a lovely photo. I can't wait for some time to pass so we can link to it again. I wonder what other new photos Rappaport will have in her book, and if there is a photo of Tatiana and Anastasia existing to go with it.

Wow! People on the net and the buyers of the book may be able to see the photo, but she has the wonderful fortune of owning such a rare and beautiful little piece of history.

Whether other 1916 formals are discovered and released or not, I now feel more free to speculate that such photographs must have been taken. It was reasonable to assume that there was a solo shot of Maria like of the other girls, but after this photo it's fun for me to imagine group shots like in 1914, the big pair and the little pair, and the rare combination of Tatiana and Anastasia.

I'm sure the book will do well. I've noticed that for some time now, each time I've been to Amazon's history section Four Sisters has been listed in future releases; I checked and it's currently #3, the highest I've seen it, and Massie's Nicholas and Alexandra was also in the top ten of best sellers for a long time though it's now fallen outside it. That makes it seem like there is a lot of interest in this topic right now.

Some of the different combinations of photos from the well-known sessions of 1905, 1913 and 1916 were released in illustrated magazines of the day. I don't know if that's where the image originated or if it is an actual cabinet card/postcard. Russian illustrated magazines are much harder to come by then English and German ones but all of them are wealth of less-common photos or less-common images from well-known sittings. BTW, the book is 54% off for Kindle from amazon. I would snap it up now if I hadn't given up buying any ebooks (a real weakness) for Lent. Hope it doesn't go up in price between now and the end of April!

I think it is 20.05.1916, Tatiana wrote in her diary: "We made photos on the balcony in our lazaret".

Another one... Olga and one of her favorite wounded officers, "little montenegrin" Dhzurkovich. WHAT is he wearing on his eyes??

Olga is very pretty here) To be continued.

Thank you, Antonina! These are such beautiful photos of the girls; I love the big pair's dresses. And just when I was wondering where the balcony is, you posted the answer. There was a photo released last year of Alexei on the same balcony that I saw dated 1917, but now I think it must be from a visit to the lazaret in 1916.

I noticed that Maria seems to be present in Olga's photo, you can see someone holding a letter by the doorway. Perhaps she was waiting for her turn to pose.

If it's not a joke, maybe it's something that's meant to let his eyes rest and recover after an injury or exposure to a chemical weapon.

I love Olga's balcony photo. She's got a hat similar to the one Tatiana's wearing in my favorite shot of her with Ortipo.
