Day 17: Not counting the "Fall of Eagles" mini-series I guess I too will go with "Rasputin".

Yet, Robert Massie is considered a great, credentialled historian. Ha. His Nickolas and Alexandra was about adoration, not absolutes. Very much like his later work, "Dreadnought".

That said, I thought the film was great as a movie and indicator of lifestyle/personalities.

The costumes and casting were both excellent. Janet Suzman was top notch in her role as Alexandra and I thought Michael Jayson did well as Nicholas. The supporting actors were very good also...not the least of which Sir Laurence Olivier's portrayal of Count Sergei Witte. Tom Baker was good as Rasputin too although it's hard to top Alan Rickman's performance.

It was a good introductory film managing to pack a lot in its three hours. All in all I'd say it's 69% "Rotten Tomatoes" and 7.1 rating on IMDB are pretty accurate. A good not great movie with too many historical flaws to merit repeated viewing.

I think it would be fun to do a little 'History vs Hollywood' with the AP crowd for a film such as this. Gather a small group in person and pause to discuss after each scene the historical inaccuracies of what was just depicted on screen. Too bad most of us are so spread around the world. I guess we could try it in a thread. Similar to JamesPratt's excellent book 'Errata'.

Day 17: I've seen Anastasia, Anastasia (cartoon) and N&A, but I'm going with N&A. Agreed with Tim, although some of it wasn't historically accurate and had flaws, it's still a good movie, despite the amount of information available at the time.

Gilliard. He had the best anecdotes.

Day 17: I haven't seen any movie about Romanovs but I feel interest for watching the oldest ones like Rasputin and the Empress or the Scarlett Empress (well, this about Catherine the Great), despite they're not totally historically accurate.

Day 18: I choose Pierre Gilliard too, I think that he did an excellent job at unmasking some claimants like AA or Poutziato. So he kept the memory of the real Imperial Children.
