New Rasputin movie with Leonardo DiCaprio
« on: June 07, 2013, 09:44:19 PM »
"Leonardo DiCaprio is set to star as the title character in the upcoming film Rasputin, according to Deadline. The 38-year-old actor will play the Russian mystic “who became an advisor to the Russian Imperial family the Romanovs.” He was embraced by Tsar Nicholas II as a healer for his only son, but his influence with the family in all matters “grew to the point that rivals tried several times to kill him, finally succeeding in 1916.” Leo reportedly liked the idea that this film brings up different sides to Rasputin that were recently unearthed, like how he was capable of switching easily between kindness and ruthlessness, and that he was a charlatan who prolifically bedded women."

Haha, WOW, I knew it!

I just knew they'd start rolling out these types of productions as we draw closer to the hundredth anniversaries of the big events. I'm not even surprised that Leo is playing the title role really. I mean it's not exactly a "no duh" like Daniel Day Lewis playing Lincoln, but DiCaprio almost never makes a bad movie anymore and is good or great in virtually everything. He'll nail this, just you wait!

A link to the news story here. I'm a little surprised IMDB has nothing on it though: http://insidemovies.ew.com/2013/06/07/leonardo-dicaprio-warner-bros-acquires-rasputin-pitch/

I find it hard to see the choirboy.featured di Caprio as Rasputin, but I could see him as Felixstowe Yussupov.

The thing is I don't think DiCaprio deserves that reputations anymore. It's been over a decade since he's played those pretty faced heart throb type of roles with consistency.

"Gangs of New York" he wasn't a choir boy, "Shutter Island", "J. Edgar", "Django Unchained", "Inception", hardly!

Before it was made could anyone have really pictured Heath Ledger as the Joker in "Dark Knight"? All he did was go out and win on Oscar before sadly passing away. I mention that in part because Rasputin reminds of Joker in a way, much like Bane in the third installment was Lenin.

I heard about this news the other day and I am personally pleased.

Leonardo is my favourite actor and I've never seen him give a bad performance! I reckon he'll tackle this role no problem. I'm with edubs31 on this.

Plus, Leonardo is part Russian isn't he?

Yes. " His mother, Irmelin (née Indenbirken), is a former legal secretary; born in Germany, she moved with her family from Oer-Erkenschwick in the Ruhr, to the U.S. during the 1950s. His father, George DiCaprio, is an underground comic artist and producer/distributor of comic books. A fourth-generation American, DiCaprio's father is of half Italian (from the Naples area) and half German descent (from Bavaria). DiCaprio's maternal grandmother, Helene Indenbirken (1915–2008),was  born Yelena Smirnova in Russia. In a 2010 conversation with the Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin, DiCaprio said that two of his grandparents were Russian."

DiCaprio  has a fascinating career. He really has no 'popcorn' flicks on his resume--even as a young actor. Even the more 'teen' oriented movies such as Romeo + Juliet were well-received and serious. He's consistently worked high end projects with respected directors both established and up and coming. He's rather taken over for Robert DeNiro as Scorcese's go-to actor. His resume is really one of the more high caliber and admirable ones out there. Even when his films don't hit the mark critically, they aren't outright crappy films--there's always a tone of noble misfire. It's surprising, given that he's usually well-received in his roles, year after year, that he's not  had more award notice or success. I'm actually old enough to remember him on the original Parenthood TV series as well as Growing Pains. He was an appealing presence then and you tended to notice his unusual name as well.

He enjoys characters of moral complexity so this take on Rasputin should be interesting.

Here Here .  He's too young and too good looking imo He just played a gorgeous, baby faced   Gatsby

Getting Leo to look anything like Father Gregory  ...wow  ....just the  rubber nose they will have to construct will be a budget buster.
But that maybe what he's going for and he will be unrecognizable. He would have to be to resemble Rasputin in the least.

I'm with GD Ella too. Here are all of DiCaprio's films since 2002. I challenge anyone to pick out a role that he didn't excel in or a film (with the possible exception of 'J. Edgar') that wasn't at least "good"...

2013 - The Great Gatsby
Jay Gatsby

2012 - Django Unchained
Calvin Candie

2011 - J. Edgar
J. Edgar Hoover

2010 - Inception
Cobb

2010 - Shutter Island
Teddy Daniels

2008 - Revolutionary Road
Frank Wheeler

2008 - Body of Lies
Roger Ferris

2006 - Blood Diamond
Danny Archer

2006 - The Departed
Billy

2004 - The Aviator
Howard Hughes

2002 - Catch Me If You Can
Frank Abagnale Jr.

2002 - Gangs of New York
Amsterdam Vallon

Now the fun part. Finding out, presumably over the coming weeks/months, who will be playing some of the other roles. One would have to believe Nicholas, Alexandra and Alexei will receive considerable screen time. So who winds up playing the Tsar, Empress, Tsarevich, OTMA, Botkin, Ana Vyrubova (?), Yusupov, Pavlovich, etc.

It's not that Di Caprio can't act. It's his looks that are the problem.

Yussupov would be an interesting morally ambiguous figure for him to get his teeth into, and physically a pretty boy at that time.

I can see an awful lot of time in make up if Di Caprio plays Rasputin.

In my opinion, yes, an awful lot of make up would be needed for the part of 'Rasputin', especially, as I think that he does look younger than he is (When I saw Gatsby, he did look fairly young in some scenes, although he is 38, 36/37 at time of filming). I'm just looking at pictures from J. Edgar, which I'm yet to see, and for the parts where J. Edgar Hoover is older, they obviously spent a lot of time in make up to make him look older, which, I think, they did a good job on.

Agreed. It's surprising he hasn't gotten more award notice, as you said. I do agree, his take on Rasputin would be interesting, and I think he'll pull it off.

Anne & Ann)

Certainly some work might need to be done in order to make him appear physically convincing. But he just played J. Edgar Hoover a year ago. Certainly they needed to do some work on him for that role: http://a.abcnews.com/images/GMA/ht_j_edgar_hoover_leonardo_dicaprio_mn_thg_111104_wg.jpg

Exactly. And I agree with you Jen that Leo doesn't have a very youthful look. Something that'll need to be overcome by the make up department on the Rasputin set since Father Grigory was just the opposite...the sort of guy who probably looked 50 when he was 30.

I can barely recognise him in that J.Edgar photo! The make up department sure did a good job on that. And very convincing.

Well, they'll need to get very good make-up artists for this then, definitely. I mean if Rasputin looked his age, and not older than his age, which I found he did, it wouldn't of been too hard a job. But because Leo looks younger than his age, in my opinion, and Rasputin looks older than his age, then yes, lots of make-up required to age!

Correction to my comment above. I said "Leo doesn't have a very youthful look". I meant to say he DOES have a youthful look.

Yes I agree with this.

I think it's going to be hard to top Alan Rickman's performance and naturally that's many of us will measure him against. Again I'll use the Batman example...did anyone think Heath Ledger even do a convincing job as the Joker much less a better job than Jack Nicholson did in 1989 playing the role? Yet he made that character his own!
