Was Tatiana Taller than her Father?
« on: August 25, 2013, 11:36:46 AM »
I know sources indicate she was the tallest of the girls, taller than Alexandra too. But, considering the fact that Nicholas was infamously short, does that imply Tatiana was taller than he was? I've been looking at photos of the two of them side by side and it's hard to tell since he's always wearing a hat.

At least based on appearance,  the basic eyeball test, I would say, yes, she was.

Nicholas is said to have been a tiny bit shorter than his wife. On the day of their wedding in 1894, K.R wrote:

So, it Tatiana was taller than her mother, she must also have been taller than her father. :)

Assuming they are all standing on even ground I'd say this well know photo pretty well proves the theory that Tatiana was the tallest in the family...

Nicholas appears to be slightly closer to the camera than Tatiana, but still looks slightly shorter than her. Marie is standing back the furthest so actually appears that she and Nicholas are right about even height. Olga is clearly shorter than her Papa and next two sisters and of course Anastasia is the littlest. I also think this photo is from 1916 so one would have to believe that Olga and Tatiana were done growing, although it's possible that Marie could have tacked on at least a few more centimeters. Perhaps by 1918 Marie and Tatiana were virtually even in height and both taller than their father.

Although I (we) do believe Tatiana was taller than her father,it can't be denied that her slender figure makes her appear taller than the fairly stocky Nicholas. Slimness generally does make one appear taller.

You're right, Edubs. With Marie andTatiana about the same height in 1917, Tatiana does appear taller than her younger sister.

I believe that she was. Just see the heights of the Romanovs' remains found and exhumated by the Russian and American scientists in Koptyaki Forest in 1991.

Scroll down to see the remains' heights -- you'll realise that Tatiana was really taller than her father. And I believe that Maria was too. Alexei was told to have been 'as same height as his father' in the summer of 1918.

What shoes were they all wearing? If the girls wore high heels that would make a difference.

Good point. Of course if Nicholas had on boots it might offset some. Would be interesting to know.

How tall was Alexei? Do you think he would have become taller than his father?

Bryndis, Alexei was supposedly as tall as his father in 1918, at the age of almost 14. and he had some more growing to do, so I assume he would have gotten taller than his father, yes.

It doesn't matter whether they were wearing the boots/heels since the photo was taken in Oct. of 1916., and you can clearly seen by the remains' heights that Tatiana and Maria were taller than their father in 1918, since we are talking about  the year of 1918. Alexei grew speedy up during late 1917/1918, you can tell by the photos from that period and I am 95 % sure that he would have been tall like real Romanov, for example, like his grandfather Alexander the Third.

Funny I don't think I've ever seen this photo angle before. Great picture. Olga and Nicholas sharing in what appears to be a lite moment. Olga with her lovely smile, and Anastasia an almost mischievous grin. The men surrounding them appear to be enjoying themselves also!

It's impressive how much Alexei managed to grow over the next 21-months. Obviously a time when most boys enjoy a considerable growth spur, but impressive he was able to catch up to the height of his father considering how much shorter he still looks here.

Sad to think that only five months after this photo Nicholas would be off the throne and his family thrown into captivity. The downward spiral began.

Boys do grow fast at that sort of age. 4-5 inches in a year is common during the growth spurt, though it does happen at different ages. One of our family pictures shows my father and brother together on Remembrance Sunday 1976, when my brother was two months past his fourteenth birthday. There he is still a good deal shorter than my 5ft 6 inch father. Two years later he was clearly taller, and is now just under 6ft. By contrast, I stopped growing at 14, when I was the same height as my father.
