If you look at many group photos you'll see George and Waldemar next to each other--often separate from their wives.

Poor Marie B looks like she wants to bolt right out of her chair.  :-/

In "A royal Family" Prince Joachim of Denmark tells this story about Margrethe: Once, at a state dinner, he sat next to her, and she taught him how to make small balls out of the bread they had with the meal, and shoot them into the other guests champagne glasses. Eventually she succeded in shooting one of the balls into Prince Henrik's glass, just as he was reaching out for it. Joachim thought he was to be blamed, but his father knew exatly who the sinner was, and that was what surprised Joachim most. That his father turned to her, and not him.
He doesn't say when this happend, but he has to be at least 18 years old to attend a state dinner. He turned 18 in 1987, so Margrethe was over 90 years old! She was indeed a lady with high spirit and fun to be with.

The Princess was raised Catholic (her mother's religion) while her brothers were raised as Lutherans.  From what I gather, this was an arrangement made by Valdemar and Marie...that any sons of the marriage would be Protestant and girls would be Catholic.

When Princess Margrethe died, the  funeral service took place in the chapel of Ledreborg Castle in Denmark on 23 September 1992, and the coffin was afterwards placed in the nearby Roskilde Cathedral – next to her parents’.

Those attending the funeral included:
Prince Joachim of Denmark (who represented Daisy as she was not in the country at the time)
Queen Ingrid of Denmark
Princess Caroline-Mathilde of Denmark
Count Christian of Rosenborg
Countess Anne Dorte of Rosenborg
Count Flemming of Rosenborg
Countess Ruth of Rosenborg
Count Axel of Rosenborg
Countess Jutta of Rosenborg
Grand Duke Jean of Luxembourg
Grand Duchess Josephine Charlotte of Luxembourg
King Michael of Romania
Queen Anne of Romania
Prince Michel of Bourbon-Parma
Princess Maria Pia of Savoy
Princess Victoire of Bourbon-Parma
Prince Philippe of Bourbon-Parma
Anette of Bourbon-Parma
Prince Jacques of Bourbon-Parma
Prince Erik of Bourbon-Parma
Princess Lidia of Bourbon-Parma
Count Knud Holstein-Ledreborg
Countess Marie Gabrielle Holstein-Ledreborg

Hello  :)

I find interesting the names the couple Prince and Princess Valdemar of Denmark (son of Chrisitian IX) chose to their children: Aage, Axel, Viggo, Erik and Margrethe.

The last 2 names are familiar to me as I go throw the Scandinavian royal genealogies, and there are equivalent names in other languages...

The first 3 are 'odd' to me...

Can someone say something about this choice of names?

In a documentary about King Chrisitian IX's family I understood that the name Aage was pronounced like AW-UH...How are them pronounced?

I don't know why they may have picked them but here is some info on the names:

Aage is a Danish variant of the name Åge. Modern form of the Old Norse name Áki, which is a diminutive form of *anuR = 'father'. Name day is 8th May.

Axel is the Scandinavian version of Absalom. From the Hebrew name אַבְשָׁלוֹם ('Avshalom) which meant "my father is peace". In the Old Testament he was a son of King David who led a revolt against his father. While fleeing on the back of a mule he got his head caught in a tree and was killed by Joab. Name day is 16th June.

Under Viggo it said "Short form of names containing the Scandinavian element vig "war"."

Erik. Name day 18th May. First element (E-/Ei-):Ancient Norse *aina-  = 'alone, one'or Ancient Norse *aiwa- = 'ever, always'. Last element (-rik): Ancient Norse -rikiaR  = 'rich, mighty ruler'

Don't know how helpful this is but maybe it's of some interest.  :) It's seems that Waldemar (Valdemar) was very in touch with his Danish roots.

I guess "returning to roots" was very fashionable in the end of 19 cent. :)

The name "Axel" isn´t too odd - it´s also popular in Sweden. In my childhood I have known serveral "Axels". ;)

It was popular back then to go back to the Nordic "roots", hence the "odd" names (odd only in royal circles though, really). It was the same in Sweden, which explains names like Astrid, Sigvard and Ingrid in the Bernadotte dynasty.  ;)

Aage and Åge are really only different spellings of the same name. In 1948 there was a spelling reform in Danish. The sound previously written aa was replaced with the å. So Aage became Åge...and the Danish towns Aalborg and Aarhus became Ålborg and Århus.  :)The å is pronounced approximately "aw" or like the German "o". The Swedish version of Aage/Åge is Åke. Danish, Swedish and Norwegian are, as far as I know, the only languages using the letter å.

Like Linnea said, Axel is not really that odd... I know a couple of Axel too.  :D I am not sure how popular Åge is in Denmark, but the Swedish version Åke is not odd at all, however men called Åke are usually between fifty and eighty years old... Viggo, on the other hand, is a little bit odd (but not unheard of) in Sweden, but I think it is rather popular in Denmark.

What a shame that William Lalor book Royalty between the Wars, doesnot list anywhere, and I have been through it 4 times, that the photo on the back cover, is the wedding of P Margarethe and P Rene of Bourbon Parma.  And because it idoesnot, none of the guests are named.

He did a front and back cover info for Before the  wars,  and also for After the Wars, but not this one.  How disappointing.

Thankyou grandduchessella,

It would appear that like when you are in the supermarket, and cannot find anything, it is there right in front of you.  Much obliged.

Dear members,

In the book: A royal family, by Lerche is a picture of Prince Valdemar behind his writing desk. A desk full of photo's. Can someone post that picture! And maybe one of you, have an another photo of this desk taken from the front.

I need a clearer picture of this desk, because I hope to ask a carpenter to build quite the same desk as that of Prince Valdemar.

Gr. Teddy
