Michael and Anne moved from Versoix to a smaller place earlier this year

This portrait is in Michael's villa in Versoix. I remember seeing some better photos of the interior of the villa with that image. Maybe even a separate photo of it. Unfortunately I'm away from Romania right now but I can ask some of my friends [if I can find them!].

Philip & Helen, Princess of Greece & Queen of Romania are first cousins.  Phillip's father Andrew and Helen's father King Constatine "Tino" are brothers.

Hello all,

I don't know if this has been discussed before, but I was just wondering what the relationship was like between Queen Marie and her daughter-in-law, Queen Mother Helen.

With Carol leaving her and coming back, and the divorce and all.

Was Queen Marie supportive of Helen?

I remember reading somewhere of Queen Marie mentioning that Helen was turning then Prince Michael into a "fat little greek" or something, when the Princess's family was with her after the 1922 deposition of King Constantine.

Regards

This was a relationship that evolved. I think at first the relationship between the two was not always smooth and amicable. Queen Marie was (IMHO) a character and one of those larger than life people who demands center stage and attention. Queen Mother Helen was a more sedate individual. It was probably like oil and water at first.

On top of that, Helen was pregnant early in her marriage and not happy and supported by her husband. Surely Marie realized how awful a partner her son was.

Certainly after a few years, Marie came to be appalled by how Carol treated his wife.  I believe for the rest of their lives, there was sympathy and respect between the two ladies. It was not likely a friendship as there would be from two people who enjoy the same interests or who are alike in character. But, certainly there was respect, and probably love, too.

i think it was a complex relationship. when elena came, marie was the center of attention. i don't think she cared much about elena. when elena became queen mother, she suddenly was more important, while marie gradually lost her role. for a while i think she was resentfull and maybe that's why she didn't like elena for a while. but then when carol came back and elena was pretty much eliminated from the public life, marie became sympathetic. because by that time carol was persecuting the both of them.

Lisa,  Helen got pregnant before the wedding, actually.  The media, at the time, described Michael as "premature", but he was a rather large baby.  Moreover, the family does not deny that Helen was with child before she went down the aisle.

Well, Lisa says Helen was pregnant early in her marriage--not got pregnant early in her marriage--so it's still correct. Maybe just a subtle way of expressing it.  :)

Oh...That is a complex relationship. However even under the most intense pressure, they did not entirely fall out. One of the reasons is that both have a keen sense of humour. I read in Elena's book by Gould Lee that she did some imitation of Missy and left the queen in skittes...
