There is a big difference between the two

I cannot imagine Queen Elena in any situation “abusing” others for her benefit
But Carol… oh God! I have a hard time imagining even one situation in which he would not scheme something to his benefit, with little scruples [but cunning, classy, not like the communist hyenas]

i don't think his sister elizabeth, for example, was easy to manipulate. just as evil, just as sneaky, but different :)

as i said i don't believe this...i think this is a problem of nature...which in their case prooved to be very...hmm...i can't find a proper word...Carmen Sylva spoiled them but she was far better than they were...she was intelligent ,decent,mannered...while Carol and his sister were not at all these things >:(

Wow, look at how much of a response this topic received!

You know, in Greece, there is an old saying, maybe supersticious if you will, that two siblings should not be married in the same year.

I can only imagine if that was true even more so in this case, as siblings from two families married each other. (Helen with Carol, Elisabeth with George).

Queen Sophie was quite upset with these weddings, she correctly assessed that they came from two different worlds and would not work out. Painfully she was later proved right when both marriages fail... :(

Does anyone on the board have any sources as to Queen Sophie's exact sentiments on these marriages?
And why she didn't put her foot down to stop them?

i read somewhere that some tradition said that if two siblings married two siblings, they had to marry the same day. but missy wanted to take part in both her children's weddings so she delayed one wedding. and that was taken as a bad omen

Queen Sophie tried to talk her daughter out of the marriage with Carol but failed. Queen Mother Elena told Lee in his book "Had I listened to her, I would have avoided years of unhappiness." Sophie also was very reserve toawrds Elisabetta all throughout her marriage to George.  :(

Hmm, can't blame Sophie for being reserved towards Elisabetta, from what I've read of her.  Sophie did encourage the match at first because George was in love, and Sophie did not know Elisabetta that well.  Carol's behavior was hard to hide though.  Helen was just too good for him, I think.  I can't find anything to sympathize with in King Carol II.  He probably just couldn't stay with Helen because that would have made his mother happy... and that definitely was not something Carol ever wanted to do.

Yes...however once Elisabetta married George, Sophie was neither kind and attentive towards her. Even Missy cmplained "At least I had given "her" daughter (meaning Sophie's daughter Helen) a tiara". Sophie didn't allow Elisabetta near her jewels. The only ones that Elisabetta recieved were from Queen Olga, who left George her emerald collection. She had it made into a demi-parure consists of a superb tiara and necklace. She later sold it to her sister-in-law, Queen Frederica. They are now worn by Queen Anne Marie of Greece.
