Such a charming family portrait (above). You'd never know by looking at it the level of disappointment there was after having yet another daughter (Anastasia).

Not completely on topic here, but...
Olga's signature here stumped me for a long time.I thought I was doing fairly well learning printed (typed) Cyrillic but then I encountered it in cursive and have never fully recovered. Without her picture above it, I'd never recognize her signature as such.
As for her photos, it's a shame that smiling in formal Russian photography was not encouraged. These are sort of the real Olga, but her happy side was so appealing, but relatively uncommon in these settings.

Ha! How about G. D. Tatiana's handwriting?
Looks like a seismograph reading after a major earthquake!

Here's a photo I've never seen before.  My jaw dropped when I looked down and saw Anastasia's bare foot, with hallux valgus (bunion) clearly visible.

Wow. You are right.I must admit I'd seen this photo before, more than once, without noticing Anastasia's foot.Besides noticing Alexandra's fairly grim face and appearance, unfortunately, of being almost more the girls'  grandmother than mother, I was drawn to Anastasia's bandaged leg.I've seen that before and she seemed to wear it almost with insouciant pride.
But yes, the hallux valgus condition does seem pretty serious, more so than I'd imagined it.
Still, a wonderful photo in its way.

Same! Never noticed her feet, only the bandage around her calf.

Interesting too this is about a plain looking as I've ever seen Alexandra in a photo. Often times even when she is bed ridden she looks dressed to receive potential guests at any time. Nothing about this photograph suggests royalty. Quite nice in a way.

Я тоже не всегда могу разобрать некоторые слова в ее письмах или дневниках :)

Stunning. I've seen hundreds of photos of Olga, as an ordinary girl with her family and appearing in public as a Grand Duchess, but to me the photos from this session are the most special. She's like a dream.
