I recently watched the movie Nicholas and Alexandra and, IMHO, it was mediocre at best. A few scenes I perceived as disgraceful to their memory. After browsing through some threads, I see that I am not alone!
Those of you that didn't care for the movie either, are there any other movies on the Romanovs that you prefer and/or consider decent?
Just curious.
Thanks!
It was made at a time, 1971, when there was limited information on the imperial family. In terms of production quality I think it was quite good, given the era. Of course it's full of mistakes and exaggerations, but I think it holds up quite well. Suzman's performance as Alexandra, Tom Baker's Rasputin, and the legendary Laurence Olivier as Count Sergei Witte are particular standouts.
Something from the same time period you might find more accurate is the "Fall of Eagles" mini-series. This is far from perfect as well but it's an impressive 13-part miniseries on the decline and fall of three imperial families; Romanov, Habsburg, Hohenzollern. The casting alone is fantastic. I recommend checking it out, all episodes are available on YouTube.
