On your visits - take a moment to notice and talk to the employees; they are wonderfully dedicated people and quite knowledgeable. An attendant, Valentina, featured in the Dutch film 'Hermitage Niks' was very kind and gracious, taking time to talk with us.

They are indeed wonderful and very informative. Not all speak English though, especially the babushkas, the "room matrons" so it helps if one has a translator with you.

Valentina was a babushka and spoke excellent English :-) It continues to amaze me how many people in Russia speak English.

It is still the exception rather than the rule. I would agree that a lot more are learning it and willing to use it with visitors. It is not difficult to find a translator if one needs one.  Especially at the Hermitage. I think they have guides and translators in just about every language.

I was wondering if anyone had a picture of the Imperial Archeological Committee’s entrance from the Winter Canal of the "New Hermitage."  It may well be walled up by now and the Hermitage website does show period watercolors of the corner of the New Hermitage facing the Winter Canal but no real picture of the Archeological committee's entrance.  Well thanks for any help with this.
