Ah, got it.

Sorry, Giorgio Tsoukalos (Ancient Aliens guy), looks like the aliens didn't do it.

Aw, that's too bad. That theory was so credible;)

why the Russian government banned people from entering that area for several years afterword.  Gives the impression they were hiding something.
Yes, it's odd. If it was only an accident, then why forbiding the entrance of this area?

It does suggest a cover up of some kind.  That's why many thing that those poor skiers blundered into something the Soviet military was up to.

This thread has dug up my previous interest in the incident and I did some internet digging tonight. Apparently there is a documentary filmmaker who made it his journey to go to Russia and 'get to the bottom' of the story. He published a book called Dead Mountain: The Untold True Story of the Dyatlov Pass Incident. It seems to be a honest review of the case (including speaking to the one hiker who bailed before the incident), rather than some of those conspiracy theories (The Russian Yeti -- as suggested by Discovery Channel).

Just read the book.  The theory the author suggests makes a lot more sense than aliens from outer space.

I saw a documental about this in Discovery Channel and also in  History Channel and its really intriguing,

Even more when something very similar happened to a russian military group in Finland. I cant remember if it was in WWI or WWII.

Yeah, it is an intriguing mystery.  Since there are no living witnesses, all one can do is offer theories.

I stumbled across mention of this incident last year.  At first glance, it certainly looked like an eerie, other-worldly mystery ("they cut themselves out of the tent from inside!" "her tongue was missing!" etc, etc.)  Yet after much study and thought, I've come to the conclusion that their tent was hit by a minor snow slide while they were preparing for bed that night.  They must have known the tent had been hit but, unable to assess fully what had just happened and, perhaps fearing this was a prelude to full fledged avalanche, probably panicked and sliced through the tent wall to escape - without taking the time to dress properly for the frightful cold.  At the edge of the woods the reality apparently set in and a few headed back to the tent - which they probably wouldn't have done had they been fleeing a murderous alien or government official.  Alas, they didn't make it because of the cold, nor did any of the others.
