Worth the money? Yes. New photos? Yes.  New info? Not sure haven't finished reading it. However, I'd say it's worth getting if only because it's the first book on Grand Duchess Maria to be published in English (that I'm aware of). If that's not motivation enough, the photos are enough for me to recommend it. I have the Russian copy and there's photos in the English copy that do no appear in the Russian print. Hope this helps.

One review gave it 3 stars, all the rest 5. It's a great book !  Worth every penny, Marie Pavlovna is a great subject & this book (the only one I believe on her) does her justice.  Anyone who loves books on the Romanov's should have it in their collection !

Marie Valerie, I saw this book going cheap in Hatchards, so I purchased it; I rather wish I hadn't!! The photos are nice (but then when aren't photos of the Romanovs fabulous?) but I was appalled by much of the content, especially the bad grammar & terrible spelling, I can't believe the book actually was printed in this manner. Eurohistory should be ashamed & embarrassed that they can't even get the spelling & grammar right, sloppy!!!!

I have bought this book last month and I must say it was not exactly what I expected. In format it is almost identical to the "Russian & Europe - Dynastic ties" with many pictures (some of which have been unseen for me and the biggest plus) but rather scarce text, at least for what I had considedred to be a biography. As a photo album, it gets 3,5 stars from me, but I am still waiting for a good, "Massie-like" bio of the Grand Duchess to be published in English.

That seems to be a major complaint of many Eurohistory books.

I have bought a few of their publications and have noticed the mistakes, pretty easy to spot ones too. I should be upset considering the amount of money I paid for them, but I also admit that the overall product, which is a rare market, makes me happy so I overlook it for the most part.

I haven't bought this one so perhaps the mistakes aren't as easy to overlook and ignore as it is with other books.

Yes I think it's appalling that such a publication can't even employ spell check!! Eurohistory should be ashamed.

I finally finished the book yesterday. It took me a while not because it would be extensive, but because it was so messily put together. Very basic in some parts, unnecesarily tedious in others. Instead of a biography that would flow and introduce us to the Grand Duchess and her life, the authors chose to separate everything into topical chapters - in which Maria Pavlovna gets mentioned, but they often consist of lists of unfamiliar names or jewelery. For example when reading about courtship and wedding of Maria Pavlovna and Vladimir Alexandrovich, I´d like to know something more about the relationship and how it all went, rather than go through the wedding presents inventory. The countless typos, often several in one paragraph, are annoying. The real value of the book lies in the pictures, that are all in good quality and some I have not seen published before. Worth the money? Well, depends on how much you paid.... I realize how rough this short review must seem, and I feel compelled to ad that I do not regret having the book. It did give me at least some new information of interest. But it doesn´t do the Grand Duchess justice and anyone hungry for more of a biography than a photoalbum should rather read Gelardi´s "From Splendor to Revolution".

I agree 100% Ally! It was a rush job & very messy with numerous spelling mistakes! I really don't know what Eurohistory was thinking...
