Having seen similar things for photos, etc, and unable to find one for this subject, I've made this to collect all songs/poems written about the Romanovs on this board. To start off, here is one I've written (which inspired the search for a suitable thread.) It came from my writing of this;
http://forum.alexanderpalace.org/index.php?topic=18097.0; a fantasy comedy in which the main characters inadvertently gatecrash the Romanovs' murder, after which they become recurring characters, able to live their lives in peace. As part of this, (hell, the whole reason I'm on here,) I've been researching and getting to know them, particularly OTMA, as people/characters; this song was inspired by the times when I've come back from that and remembered the grim reality of their situation and its end.
THE WAY YOU WERE
Oh how I'd like to have known,
Your dreams of a life of your own,
If I could I'd lend you an ear,
For all of the lies that you fear,
From the letters across the hall,
To a third-hand look at the slow-motion fall,
Of the only world you'll ever see,
To all the things that must be.
To memories only ghosts can now recall,
You were born into a guilded crib,
And though they gave you a pauper's bib,
Your kindness could never stall,
The guns that blazed the way,
For the Reds to have their day,
The pyre beneath your floor,
And the men who answered the call.
May I brighten your day?
Let the saucers take me away,
To hear laughter I wish I could share,
Of future deeds to which you lay claim,
And children you don't yet know by name,
If only I had time laid bare,
I'd take you all by the hand,
And save you from the undiscovered land.
And you could have been a beacon,
If given the chance to shine,
But the chains began to weaken,
And the streets ran red with wine,
You could have been a silent clown,
Queen of a kingdom in white and brown,
If not for the rusted crown,
That dragged you forever down.
And though they stopped you smiling,
When you still had so many to give,
They never stopped you shining,
On those who were yet to live,
I'll never get the chance,
To join you in your dance,
So I'm left to picture your words,
Though no more than a blur,
To dream of whispers unheard,
And think about the way you were.
I will, if no-one beats me to it, post links to the other threads tomorrow.
