The Lost Prince

Perhaps its already  known.    but PBS will be running ,this fall I think,on Masterpiece Threatre,a 2 part drama called -The Lost Prince-.Its the story of Prince John;the  youngest son of King George & Queen Mary. The story ,and characters, of the Romanov family are a part.Cant remember all the cast;but Gina Mckee plays Johns nanny,Miranda Richardson Queen Mary, and Michael Gambon King Edward.Ive read the script;seen production photos, and its a  well done and moving story.Sadly,Empress Alexandra is portrayed ,again,as a woman with a lot of issues. The famous photo of  Nicholas and  George is even recreated.Though, the actor playing Nicholas is a lot taller then he really was.

I have seen this drama and enjoyed it very much.  However, I do have some issues with how they portrayed Alix.  I will say no more until it's shown on American television.
So long and thanks for all the fish

Ilana,
Please tell us more about it. I won't have a chance to see it because I don't live in the US. So, what are the issues you had with Alix's characterizations?

I've checked out the website and its impressive. Hopefully it will come to Canada. I was surprised to read about Prince John having autism.

I have a book, "The Golden Age of Royalty--Photography 1958-1030" There are about 4 or 5 pictures of Prince John at different ages.

I checked the Amazon.com (US) website in regards to 'The Lost Prince' today, and found out that it is due to be released in October 2003.   Worth purchasing?

The Lost Prince has already been shown in Canada during "British Week" on CBC. I believe that was last November. I'm sure it will be shown again. The movie is well worth seeing. Many of the characterizations are excellent and it is well-acted, capturing both Prince John's situation and the larger historical events of the time. The exception to the the strong characterisations, as noted above, is Alexandra.

P.S. Glad there are fellow Canadians on message board!

It certainly was worth watching but I found Nicholas' gruff "russki" accent a little overdone, I always thought that Nicholas spoke perfect English, if accented. The programme does portray him as indifferent and aloof. Dithering over the deployment of troops whilst he bathes.
Gina McKee is splendid in the role of Nanny. Surely one of our best actresses, and the portrayal of HMQ Mary by Miranda Richardson is touching and worth seeing for the attitudes of the period towards "disabilities" .
Prince John wasn't autistic but prone to childhood seizures, possibly epileptic in nature, but he wasn't savant, I suppose the possibility of Prince John having a seizure in public would be too dangerous for the family to deal with. Something we can all understand from what we know of how far Royal parents are prepared to go to "put a brave face on it"

A good drama, acted well with some basis in fact.

I do hope that I haven't spoiled anything for you!!

Thanks for clarifying the autism and savant issue about Prince John. The only thing I can think of after re-reading the web site The Lost Prince-- is that Prince John may have had Asperger's Syndrome which could be attributed to his autistic like tendencies.

I can't wait for this show to come to Canada.

I'm so glad PBS is running this here. I was thinking about buying the video, but now I can watch and judge before buying. I had heard a lot of criticism re: Alexandra's portrayal over on the alt.royalty boards so I'm reading for it. They had a nice spread not too long ago in either Majesty or Royalty dealing with the miniseries and had photos from it.

I am waiting impatiently for the DVD here in the States.
It was originally set for this past April, then it was backed up to the 1st week of October, Now according to another video website it is backed up to the end of December.

Okay what's going on???

I have the book it has some wonderful photos of the performers including one of Maria looking out of a window supposedly in Ekaterinburg.

The sound trak is beautiful.
