Alexandra was probably very much used to having her own way. I think the shoe episode was to show her control. As for the execution room - it was way too large. Alexandra had far less to do than Mary and of course an epileptic was a very different kettle of fish from Alexis. Alexis simply was crippled at times by his disease and had to be carried or was totally bedridden. Prince John appeared perfectly normal and then could have a fit which would have been very distressing and alarming. He could therefore hardly be invited to be present on official occasions. Mary simply did not have the time to be a full-time carer/nurse. Don't be too harsh on her.

I thought the movie was all right. I mean, I enjoyed it! But I think, yes, a lot of it was a little too inaccurate. It was just nice to have the family in it, I think. Nicholas didn't look like Nicky at all, in my opinion. And yeah, the children and Alix were also a little off appearance-wise, to me. But George V was halfway decent regarding the actor who portrayed him. Both George and Mary were great actors! (Of course, it's Miranda Richardson! )

Anyway, I think the murder scene was....ehh, well, I didn't like it. I don't know. It always looks to me like the actor playing Alexei was a little too fake. I don't know, and that seems like an awful thing to say...but it just LOOKED like he was acting, if that makes sense? And yeah, how they always spoke Russian bothered me too. Just because Alix would definitely have spoken in English to the English king and queen....

Well, I guess that's my spiel. I still loved the movie though...I think I'll go order it now.

True but did you also notice Nicholas was speaking English too George and Mary?

well Nicholas spoke English very well and as far as I know neither George V or Mary spoke any Russian ...

It is a BBC production, what would you expect them to be speaking?  Their only other common languages would be German or French, but then, no one would watch it!

I haven't seen it, and i'm just wondering, could someone explain to me how much they are in the film, what they do, how they relate to each other in this film and whether it's a generally good representation of them? Because i've heard both good and bad reports. I would watch the movie myself, but it's like impossible to buy or rent. in Australia

I think you will find The Lost Prince available through ABC Shops in Australia. The Romanovs don't play a major role in the film. There is one section about their visit to England where Alexandra is not necessarily depicted kindly. The girls are seen on the beach playing. Nicholas II is seen swimming and of course there is a reenactment of the photo taken of him with his cousin George V. The latter scene depicts the murder in a room which is far too large. Alexandra in the early scene is seen as a dominatrix.

I have to agree with dmitri! The movie is very good, if you're especially intrigued by the "House of Windsor." I do recommend you see it. You won't be losing anything by it (except for the poor portrayal of the Romanovs), and the acting is just great! It really is a good movie, except for the Romanov bits....Nicholas looked nothing like Nicholas to me, and he didn't have that tender, fatherly look to him. I thought he could better pass for Alexander III than Nicholas II. Aleksandra constantly spoke Russian in the movie (when of course she wouldn't if she was back in England), and they just portrayed her...well, like Dmitri said, not nice.
Of course, the whole thing is extremely sad, especially the Windsor family's reaction to hearing their cousin's death. ("The Lost Prince's" story is very tragic as well). I do recommend it, honestly! I still love it, even though--as I said--the Russian history bit is a little off. They didn't die in a farm house, and they didn't have bunk beds...I don't know why...that always bothered me a little...

"The Lost Prince" is a very touching movie and I recommend it highly. The acting is great - especially the young actors who portray Prince John, Gina McKee (Lala) and Miranda Richardson (Queen Mary). I, too, was disappointed with the depiction of the Imperial Family. Alexandra was portrayed as a total control freak and Nicholas as so weak he had to consult his wife on which way to stand during the photo shoot of that famous NII and GV photo. Their portrayal was over the top, I believe. And yes, I could not believe the amount of Russian they spoke in the movie even though they were visiting cousins in England.
It was interesting seeing what could have been the personalities of the Windsors during that time. The coldness of Queen Mary that seemed to melt at the death of the "beautiful girls" (the grand duchesses) and the tenderness she displayed after the death of Prince John brought a flood of tears for me. The hardness of GV was difficult though and it is hard for me to imagine he was really that hot-tempered, even though there are reports that agree with that assessment. King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra were affectionate grandparents. And the relationship between Prince George (later Duke of Kent) and Prince John was so touching.

Anna, I don't mean to sound harsh but there are other threads in this section on The Lost Prince.  If you had gone back a little, you would have found all the information you want and would not have found it necessary to start another one.

I have finally been able to watch it. The portrayal of Alexandra was indeed preposterous. Not only wasn't she depicted as very "nice", the entire character didn't bear any resemblance to the real Alix. The actress didn't remotely resemble her nor did she have any regal posture. She looked simply common. I didn't even find her particularly aloof or shy in the way Alix appeared to the general public. I thought Miranda Richardson would have made a better Alix than this actress whose name I don't even remember.
Miranda Richardson was indeed fabulous. I think I've never seen her better.   

And then one of my favourite actors, Bill Nighy, was in it too, Just love his voice.

Yea i didn't agree with how Alexandra was acting in the movie and the actress playing her looked nothing like Alix,
but i thought the parts of the movie where Prince John was having seizures and learning difficulties were very sad for me to watch,  i started tearing up when he had his first one at the funeral...

I cried uncontrollably at the end. It was very touching to see that his short life had been important.

It's a touch difficult to really know how Alexandra would have behaved on different occasions. There is some evidence, but much has understandably lost about the real Alexandra. It is generally agreed though that in public she was cold and aloof.
