It's a touch difficult to really know how Alexandra would have behaved on different occasions. There is some evidence, but much has understandably lost about the real Alexandra. It is generally agreed though that in public she was cold and aloof.

Hard to be perceived otherwise when burdened by matters that few were aware of. Aloof? no, it would be more accurate to state that whilst always courteous, involved with her task, she set herself apart from those she hardly knew.

Yes no wonder Alexander III and Maria Feodorovna did not want her as part of their family and only caved in when Alexander III was dying.

Well, of course, that's what "aloof" means.

On the other hand, isn't being "aloof" the nature of being "royal"? Alexandra's grandmother wasn't a million laughs in public, either, and Ella wasn't exactly the People's Grand Duchess, either.

Well some people do not have a library that can access films like that. I tried to get this film through my libraries Inter-provincial library search network and they couldn't find a copy. I eventually bought a one in this enormous specialty movie store in Montreal. I've never found it elsewhere.

'The Lost Prince' was shown again on the UK History Sky Channel over Christmas. Just a reminder that there is a 20-track CD of the music used in the film, and Stephen Poliakoff's screenplay is available in a paperback book, which has many photos and a long intro about the background and the making of the film.

I just saw the movie and I loved it. I find it strange that this Prince was never mentioned in any books I read about the British Roayl Family. Is the movie based on a true story? Is it based in any book?

Thank you Amelia

Prince John really did exist. He was the youngest child of King George V of Great Britain and Queen Mary. He did suffer from some form of autism and a mental disability and did live most of his life away from the family with Lala. He is mentioned in several books, including a book about Queen Mary called "Matriarch" by Anne Edwards. Although the book has some inaccuracies, you can find out about Prince John there. There is also a great thread in the Windsors section of this forum that includes great pictures of Prince John with his family. Check it out. ;D

I just saw this movie and omfg...Miranda Richardson was bloody fricking BRILLIANT. I don't think i've ever seen her as good, and it's funny because this isn't one of her more acclaimed roles. But seriously...wow. I can't get over how GOOD she was as Queen Mary. Gina Mckee (or however you spell it) was very good also.

I thought it was very good actually it was really entertaining and moving. I don't know much about Prince John but I enjoyed it anyway, or maybe because of that. Nicholas and Alexandra were pretty preposterously portrayed, but whatever, I thought it was funny.

But yeah..Miranda Richardson was totally robbed of her golden globe imo, does anyone know who did win?

The IMDB website said Glenn Close won in the best actress in a mini-series for the Lion in Winter that year. Oh well.
Miranda Richardson is great in anything she is in. The first thing I saw her in she was playing a Southerner and I had no idea until I saw her in another film that she was British and not an American Southerner.
Gina McKee is also one of my favorite actresses. She portrayed Lala so warmly and my heart broke for her when Prince John died.

I thought this was a good movie but as many of you have already pointed out the actress of played Empress Alexandra, Ingeborga Dapkunaite, did not do a good job.  Am I the only one who felt her accent was odd?

But, the movie was well made but George V came off as almost a madman, the way he yelled at George and John for playing soldiers with foreign countries, but on the other hand Edward VII was funny and the butter race was a great addition.

The friendship between Prince George and his brother Prince John was also nice and I liked the way Georgie always tried to listen in to policy meetings and the such.  The movie also seemed to do a good job showing how everybody was related to everybody else.  But the one thing I am wondering is why when asked Prince John would say "my cousin the Tsar" or "my cousin the Kaiser" instead of uncle?

I often wonder if the director made the adult characters a little preposterous in order to show Prince John's simplicity, honesty, goodness and childlike perspective. I somehow doubt King George V was as mean, Tsar Nicholas II as indecisive, Queen Mary as cold, or Tsarina Alexandra as bossy and condescending. Yes, her accent was odd.

But the one thing I am wondering is why when asked Prince John would say "my cousin the Tsar" or "my cousin the Kaiser" instead of uncle?

George V was first cousin to Nicholas II and William II - so Prince John would have been 1st cousin - once removed. I can't remember if Prince John referred to them as cousin or uncle. Cousin would be correct. I just bought the movie last week after viewing it  a few years ago. I watched it partway through and I can't remember how Prince John referred to them.
