Countess Warasoff
(1/1)
ArchHistory:
I would like to identify a Countess Warasoff, who according to a letter written in 1903 was a niece of Countess Sophie Petrovna de Beckendorff née Shuvalov (wife of Ambassador Alexander Benckendorff.) In the letter Countess Warasoff is a young widow. I wonder if the letter writer misspelled the name. The letter writer is not Russian but visiting Russia at the Benckendorff estate Sosnovka in the Tambov District. Does the name Warasoff ring a bell to anyone?
Any help much appreciated!

As far as I can see there were no Counts Varasov / Warasoff. I think the writer means Varvara (i.e. Barbara) Davidovna, widowed Countess Vorontsova-Dashkova (probably madame de Worontsoff in French / for short, with Vorontsov being pronounced Varantsoff in Russian), née Orlova, niece of Sophie Shuvalova, born 1870 and widowed in 1897.
