Was Tatiana Taller than her Father?

Boys do grow fast at that sort of age. 4-5 inches in a year is common during the growth spurt, though it does happen at different ages. One of our family pictures shows my father and brother together on Remembrance Sunday 1976, when my brother was two months past his fourteenth birthday. There he is still a good deal shorter than my 5ft 6 inch father. Two years later he was clearly taller, and is now just under 6ft. By contrast, I stopped growing at 14, when I was the same height as my father.

I'm just a over six feet and was taller than the vast majority of boys in my school up until the age of about 16. Many of the guys I was an inch or two taller then continued to grow and I stopped. Now some of them are 6'2'' or 6'3'' when I was always taller than they were through our childhood. A minor source of frustration I guess you could say :-)

Another thing I remember quite well is the 8.5 foot hoops in basketball league. I was on the Middle School team in 7th and 8th grade and we used the standard ten-foot rims, same as the girls, but the community league was only at the 8.5" height through our middle school years. When we were 12 or 13 there was no significant height advantage between the boys and girls players and then all of the sudden we shot up. By the time we reached high school the 10" basketsseemed proportionately about the same as the 8.5" foot baskets were two or three years earlier.

I read that when Anna Anderson first surfaced, they thought she was Tatiana.  Then someone said, "she can't be Tatiana, she's too short."

What shoes were they all wearing? If the girls wore high heels that would make a difference.

Good point. Of course if Nicholas had on boots it might offset some. Would be interesting to know.

Although I think we're agreed at this point, I would point out that in the photo in question, which is posed in a winter environment with snow on the ground,  everybody would be wearing boots of some kind. So their height enhancing effect would apply to all and their relative heights would still probably be apparent.


And yay for that growth spurt in guys! I enjoyed mine(though in my older years I've relinquished some of it) and Alexei seemed to have been on his in 1917/18. He might have become fairly tall since on his father's side the men were very tall and his mother Alexandra was above average height , as were her Hesse sisters.

Nicholas was about 5ft 7. Alexandra looks taller than him in some photographs, but we have to take account of hats and possibly high heels.

To judge from a photograph of Nicholas and Alexei sawing wood shortly before leaving Tobolsk, Alexei was probably about 5ft 4 when he was killed. Maybe rather more, on the basis that he may have been into the adolescent growth spurt by then.
