Winter Palace in Winter Snow

In the final picture, it looks like there are two women standing in the arched doorway at far left.  I wonder who they could be.

I am not sure if that is Nicholas II in the centre and may be Alexandra or court ladies standing in the doorway. There are many entries in Nicholas' diary where he went to the guardroom, toured the halls to visit the guards, and with the guards in the large courtyard.

The red façade of the Winter Palace in 1920s and an amazing aerial view of the garden with the gates still there:

Thanks Joanna for your beautifully written and presented Blog. The information is so very interesting.

I loved the Hermitage in red - I did have old postcards of it red. There were many buildings painted in red in St. Petersburg at the time; some have changed and some are still red.

But my favourite colour for the Winter Palace is today's green/blue - it is calm and elegant.

Great post and illustrations!

Just a slight clarification:
In the Orthodox Church, the forty days of Lent are calculated differently than in the West. Thus, for the Orthodox, Lent or the Great Fast always begins on a Monday. Festivities would have to end by midnight on Sunday. And so, there is no Shrove Tuesday, or Ash Wednesday.

Thank you very much Inok Nikolai.

I have edited the post to the Great Fast beginning on Monday. Shrovetide is the word I have used before for others in English to represent Maslenitsa. And writing the word pancake, how I would love to be in St. Petersburg for a blini!

Yes, I quite understand.
FYI: The liturgical term for that week is "Cheese-fare Week", it being the last week when dairy products can be eaten.
