Annie, did you mention "conspiracy"? ;)
Wow!

Putting all kidding aside, I think that the wall of the Palace of Holyroodhouse probably heard a few conspiracies through the ages.

Most people who visit Edinburgh walk the "Royal Mile".  A the bottom of the hill is Holyroodhouse and at the top of the hill is Edinburgh Castle.

I'm starting with Holyroodhouse because it is the first set of photographs in my album and for no other reason.

This area at the bottom of the Royal Mile  was not first known for it's Palace of Holyroodhouse  but for the Monastary [later it became the Abbey] founded in 1128 by the Scotish King David I (1124-53) for his Augustinian cannons [priests who followed St. Augustine of Hippo].

In 1544 the abbey fell victim to the troops under Earl of Hertford who sacked and then burned the abbey.  The religious treasures were taken to England.  Three years later, the lead of the roof and the bell were taken by Duke of Somerset who, by the way, was known earlier as the Earl of Hertford, who had attacked the abbey.  Reconstruction of the restored monarchy under Charles in 1660 started and  included the Abbey as well as the Palace of Holyroodhouse, which became the royal residence in Scotland.

By the time I visited the Abbey in the late 1900s, the Abbey was once, again a mere shell of what it was even thought the palace itself has been restored.

When we were there, the flag on the roof showed Queen Elisabeth II was in residence and the huge grassy area on the side of the old palace was dotted with tables where a huge get-togather for royals and guests were going to take place.

Yes, you were right, my friendly devil. john of Gaunt ought to figure between Edward III and John Beaufort, who was not his son, but his grandson

I've put a red point besides(as your colour is) as a mark of my gratitude

I have just finished reading John Guy's resent biography Queen of Scots: The True life of Mary Stuart which has some insightful research material but is flawed in my poor opinion ...Is anyone here familiar with this text?

Yes, I've just finished reading it! I thought it was great. Why did you think it was flawed?
