Mark, I searched the Lieven family tree without finding any G.I. Lieven.

There are of course many generals, mainly Swede and Russians.
Could this one be a Swede General of Infantery?
If so, I could help you to circle you enquiry.

What can you say about this uniform? the medals? the origin of the portrait?

It looks like there have been two branches of yours in Sweden.

Your name was written in Sweden "von Liewen"
try google.se and see if anything will show up.

"G" could stand for Graf (Grevlig) and I for Iohann!
this is only an assumption/possibility.

I think I found it.
3.1.4.3.2.1.1.2.1.1.3. Hedvig Tott, born 22 August 1736, died 23 March 1778 at Lärka, married 29 June 1759 baron Carl Johan von Liewen (born 1733, died 1798).

G is a C
I and J the same

Johan used to be written in Sweden as Iohann

Thank you Nicolay, it is a good idea to interpret it as Carl Johann.
If it is a uniform of General, then you've found the right guy. If not... have in mind that the family tree gives us another Carl Johann who, as far as I understand German (which I don't !), is Carl Johann von Liewen (23 July 1771 - 24 September 1826 in Helsinborg) who was Captain of the Regiment King of Sweden in Helsinborg since 3 February 1813). With his wife Antoinette Elisabeth von Bauswolf (?), they had 5 children, including another Carl Johann (1818-1868) who also started his carreer in the army !
By the way the maiden name of the General Carl Johann von Liewen is spelled v. Thott in the familiy tree.

Can anyone please help me with information about Princess Sophia Lieven who was I believe imprisoned in Russia between the first and second world war. Her sister was Alexandra Lieven who was married to the Lord Mayor of London, Sir John Edward Kynaston Studd. Any further information would be hugely appreciated. Many thanks.

The only Sophie in the family tree who could fit your question seems to be this one

between 1860 and 1900 and his place Fockenhof. I know it was in Latvia.

I am coming back from Latvia where I spent a few days exploring sites related to the Lieven family in the medieval and the romantic periods.

Quotes:

Yes, I knew this text. The guy is Hans Heinrik von LIWEN or LIEWEN (both spellings have been used).
1664-1733, married with Katarina Elisabeth von UEXKÜLL (1 son, Hans Henrik as his father and a soldier too), then to Margareta Juliana von TIESENHAUSEN (no issue), Swedish Count in 1719, General Major, National Advisor.
