I think maybe it's just that she was older and had more things going on in her life than Anastasia did who was still maturing. But actually, Anastasia and Gilliard had a very close relationship because Gilliard came to know her when she was very little and he said she would often come to him trembling with emotion to confide in him little things going on in her life.

I've always thought that was a very sweet little story. It seems that Anastasia apparently was keen and interested in learning in the beginning, but afterwards, I think she grew rather sick of it.

Yes, Olga was the eldest which means that it is most likely that she had more complicating things happening in her life than her younger siblings, as well as an interesting character (Olga being a little bit more independent than her sisters and brother). One strong example is marriage (being the eldest, it is usually assumed that they would be married first), which I recall Gilliard to have spoken about her possible marriage to Prince Carol of Romania and Olga's feelings about it. And also, being probably the most interested and enjoying learning may have brought a closer relationship between Olga and her tutor (although later on Gilliard writes that it no longer appeared that she was interested in schoolwork).

Abslolutely! He was the most indenpedent girl, how to describe she in two words? ---she was thin and very strong at same time.
What's real reason?---she asked Mr.Gilliard when they went to Romania in June 1914.....
Also, she was smart - and understood situation in their captivity.........
Og, My God, we are in topic off, Anastasia is subject!---Many accounts said the same or smiliar things about Anastasia-- Joking; that word reminds me about she, as accounts said....And girl made with charm things easier during captivity.....Right?

Anastasia did have a very good sense of humour and she was able to make anyone burst out into laughter. When Nicholas, Alix and Maria left for Ekaterinburg, Anastasia was left behind so she could lift up the spirits of those around her, even though, of course, she was very sad that her parents and sister were leaving and she was scared for them. I haven't got any doubt that during captivity Anastasia was able to bring happiness into the room with her funny jokes. There was even one incident when she was part of a play and her outfit rolled up and it showed her legs and underwear, and it had been in a very long time that Nicholas and especially Alix were able to enjoy such strong laughter that they began to cry.

That's always been one of my favorite things about Anastasia: her sense of humor! She had such an infectious enthusiasm about life, and she was afraid of nothing.

I most definitely would have liked her--altho she undoubtedly could be maddening at times, and she cheated at games lol!  :D

And Archaeologistwanna-be, keep your dreams alive! You sound very bright and already you seem to have done quite a bit of research, which is a good start!  :)

I hope someday to read your book on Anastasia!

I have already tried some of your suggestions, but I hadn't thought much about the GARF. I don't think my parents will be very happy about me suggesting a trip to russia however, so I guess I'll just have to keep looking on the web for information and books.( Holly, you were right, I'm sure I haven't read every Anastasia book, even though I've read all you have suggested. I was just trying to say  that my library has an extremely limited selection.)

Almost all libraries have a "loan" policy and you can have them find books from larger libraries and have them sent to your library and you can usually take them home.  It might take a few months or longer but it's worth the time and effort.  I remember one time I requested a very old book,  it arrived with the stipulation that it wouldn't leave the library where I was.  The librarian and I  with great care copied the book, which was falling apart.   So,  don't believe you are limited.  A good librarian will help you find just about everything you need.

Anastasia's Characteristics

I've started a thread on OTM, and am now at Anastasia.

Anastasia was obviously the imp - but what else was there to her? Please use anecdotes, snippets from biographies, photos and their captions, or anything to explain your point.

Thank you,
Olga Bernice

Anastasia Nicolaievna was the originator of all mischief, and was as witty and amusing as she was lazy at her lessons. She was quick and observant, with a keen sense of humor, and was the only one of the sisters who never knew the meaning of shyness. Baroness Buxhoevden.

Ingenuousness and utter simplicity were the most characteristic qualities of Anastasia  Nicolaievna. As a small child she was very mischievous, spotting at once the comical traits in people's characters and afterwards imitating them very skillfully, so that it was irresistibly funny…Even at sixteen she still behaved like a headstrong young foal that has run away from its master. …you could not escape from her irresistible charm, made up of freshness & enjoyment of life…Pierre Gilliard, tutor to Imperial Children

My favorite goddaughter was she indeed! I liked her fearlessness. She never whimpered or cried, even when hurt. She was a fearful tomboy. Goodness only knows which of the young cousins had taught her how to climb trees, but climb them she did, even when she was quite small. It was not generally known that she had a weak back and the doctors ordered massage. Anastasia or "Shvibzik," as I used to call her, hated what she labeled "fuss." A hospital nurse, Tatiana Gromova, used to come to the palace twice a week, and my naughty little niece would hide in a cupboard or under her bed, just to put off the massage by another five minutes or so. I suppose the doctors were right about the defective muscle, but nobody, seeing Anastasia at play, would have believed it, so quick and energetic was she. And what a bundle of mischief!
But she was a Shvibzik indeed. As she grew older, she developed a gift for mimicry. Ladies who came to see my sister-in-law never knew that somewhere unseen in the background, their Empress's youngest daughter was watching every movement of theirs, every peculiarity, and later it would all come out when we were by ourselves. That art of Anastasia's was not really encouraged, but oh the fun we had when we heard duplicated the fat Countess Kutuzova, one of my mother's ladies-in-waiting, complaining of a heart attack brought on by the appearance of a mouse. Very naughty of Anastasia, but she was certainly brilliant at it!  --Olga Alexandrovna, Anastasia’s aunt on her father’s side

I remember one small joke of Anastasia's while they were under "house arrest" at Tsarskoe Selo--clearly not a very happy time, altho sadly it was to get much much worse.

Anyway as I recall, one of the Imperial Family's friends--I think Lili Dehn but could be wrong--accidentally broke an extremely valuable vase and was horrified at what she had done. She kept trying to stammer out her apologies (it was irreplaceable!!) and was overwhelmed with shame and embarrassment.

Well, we know that by then the Provisional Government had declared anything which belonged to the Romanovs actually belonged to the State. Anastasia, thinking of this, took it upon herself to calm poor Lili. She pointed to the shattered bits of vase scattered across the floor and said laughingly:

"Don't worry, Lili, it isn't ours anyway--it belongs to the goverment!"  ;)

To be precise, it happened during the day of revolution, before Nicholas's abdication - last days of February OS. So, formallu, Nicholas was still tsar, but maybe Anastasia understood what was going on. My source is The last Empress by King, but i'm going to check Dehn's book about Alexandra to be sure and more reliable ^^

What page? I don't recall that episode and I'm having trouble finding it.

Maybe i'm wrong because i was going by memory.
*checking*
You're right. I was wrong. It's in Tsar by Kurth. In my italian translation it is on page 145 when there is a moder photo of Ap's gate.
I always make confusion between The last Empress and Tsar because i read it together.
Sorry for the wrong info and thanks Sarah for correcting.

I tried to check for it in dehn's The reals Tsaritsa but couldn't find. Kurth doesn't citate the source, so i'm a bit confused. I'll look better.
