François Flameng (1856-1923)
« on: October 02, 2018, 04:21:36 AM »
François Flameng (1856-1923) is a well-known French painter at the end of the 19th century.

He was particularly famous in Russia. He often painted the imperial family and traveled in Russia. The Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris has a rich collection of photographs on this subject.

I did a major university study in Flameng, and I came across this photograph:

The Empress is in Anna Viroubova's house

Behind her, on the right, is a reproduction of a famous Flameng painting: Reception at Malmaison

It is now preserved at the Hermitage.

Flameng painted many members of the imperial family.

Here Elisaveta Feodorovna, sister of the Empress, in 1894:

A portrait of Queen Victoria, but of course we recognize Nicolas II on the left:

Thank you very much PAGE for noting the copy of Flameng's painting in Anna's house.

Have you seen the photograph of Flameng painting Princess Yusupov at Arkangelskoe c1894? It was the first photo I had seen of him in Russia although he was frequently mentioned in the diaries.

Yes. There are many pictures of Flameng in Russia taken during the execution of this painting, kept at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in Paris. Flameng is sitting next to his wife (Henriette Flameng, daughter of a prominent French politician).

Like the imperial family, Flameng was passionate about photography.

Note that in 1901 (or 1896, I'm not sure), when Nicolas II comes to France, he notices Flameng and comes to shake his hand in person. It says of Flameng's affinity with the imperial court of Russia.
