Aerial view of the Winter Palace - Note the small inner courtyard where windows of Alexandra's Bath and Nicholas' Pool overlooked:

I notice, there appears to be 7 interior courtyards throughout the palace, does anyone know if they were used for anything. Or did they just provide window space for interior rooms...?

Interior courtyards were used to allow light and air into interior rooms - in everything from palaces to NYC tenements.  Made living in such buildings more pleasant, and people healthier.
