Robert, I am going to beat you to it even though it is still 15 minutes before 9 February on the East Coast  ;)

9 February, 2002. Britain's Princess Margaret died in London at age 71.

9 February, 1984. Soviet leader Yuri V. Andropov died at age 69, less than 15 months after succeeding Leonid Brezhnev.

9  Feb. 1830 birthday of Abdul Aziz, Ottoman Sultan.  Actually tried to ally with Alex. II [I had the wrong Sultan before!]

Those who admire the classic works of Fyodor Dostoyevsky have commemmorated the 124th anniversary of his death on 9 February in 1881, in his SPb Memorial-appartment museum on Kuznechnii Perulok.

He was best known as the author of:

Crime and Punishment, Brothers Karamazov and Idiot which have been translated into film by the Russian and Western film industries.
