I wouldn't exactly phrase it as 'the Americans' like it was a conspiracy. There were a handful of thieves in Germany and in the US who stole and fenced the jewelry. More Americans prosecuted the theft than participated in it.

It was members of the American army that occupy the palace that stolen the Hesse jewels. Their greedy acts was subject of a book that I still own. Many of the pieces were never found.

Gone. Only the marriage ear of wheat tiara remained with the family.

She did dye her her blond sometime. Was it for Hitler who love blonds ? Like Eva & Marlene ?

She was born blonde. Jolanda and Maria are brunettes, Mafalda was blonde.

In the late 19th century Emilio Salgari was Italy's foremost writer of adventure novels. He was knighted in 1897 in recognition for his work. The Black Corsair, the Chevalier Emilio, is named after himself. He also pays tribute to the House of Savoy, Italy's Royal family to show his gratitude. Yolanda, the Black Corsair's daughter is named after Princess Yolanda of Savoy.

I read that Mafalda was named after her great-great-great...ancestor, Mafalda of Savoy, the first queen of Portugal.

http://pt.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mafalda_de_Saboia

At the time of her birth, the houses of Savoy and Bragança were quite close, Maria Pia of Savoy being the Dowager Queen of Portugal and it was her nephew's  way to pay hommage to her relatives.

King D.Carlos was invited to be the god-father of the future Umberto II.

Unfortunately there was the Roman problem. Either one went to Rome to visit the Pope or the Savoys. Not both.

In the end he had to refuse being Umberto's god-father.

Eventually Umberto would choose Portugal to live his exile.

The story goes round and round.
