Hello,
I would be most grateful for any assistance in obtaining a book for my partner. It is our 5th anniversary and am wanting to get him something special. For the last few years every now and then he mentions the "Imperial palace ball Book", and what a great addition to the Romanov library he has. As he has got just about every book written on this family I would love to present it as a present.
Trouble is i cannot find it here in Australia, or on Amazon. Any ideas where I can get the correct name for the book, and where I can purchase the book.
Any information is most appreciated.

'Costume Ball in the Winter Palace' and the publishing house is 'Russky Antiquariat Ltd, Moscow'.  the ISBN is 5-98129-002-1

It will be expensive! The book was $400 US on release.  Good luck.

This is hardly a new topic, as there is a whole thread on the book itself, as I recall. However, if you are determined, be prepared to  pay a lot for it! I bought my copy from the publisher- Russky Aniquariate in St Petersburg. It is a very heavy 2 volume boxed set  but as I carried it home myself I did not pay shipping.  There is also a source in the UK that might have a copy or two, but I am not on good terms with the, You can check availability through Bookfinder.com.  In both cases the the cost was about $300 US.  Shipping is considerable, especially to Australia, I imagine. In any case avoid at all costs a US  site that advertises it, or used to. Several of us on the forum have tried to  usem them, all with frustrating results.
You can pm me if you wish more details, as I want to avoid  endorsing any one source on the public forum.

You can check on the sub forum The World And Culture where there is an entire thread dedicated to the pictures from a portfolio of this costume ball that a member found at his local public library.

This thread doesn't tell you where to buy the book, but does give you an idea of what is in it.

When the member posted his pictures, he asked FA specifically to lock the thread and to not allow any other posting to the thread.  So it has stayed under Their World and Culture and was hidden until just recently when I discovered it again while doing some "spring cleaning" on the sub forum.

Check it out!

Mr. Beeche had promised Van Hoogstraten in The Hague that he would present a copy of this book to them. But Mr. Beeche forgets from time to time his promises!

unlikely I would think due to the cost of producing the book and the fact the initial run didn't sell out quick(er) or all.  In fact it's a weird re-run of the history of the first book on the ball produced by Tsarina Alexandra Feodorovna - apparently they didn't sell nearly as many copies as they anticipated and the unsold copies sat around in storage in Russia till the revolution, and they only ever sold a handfull of the original version of the book outside Russia as curiosities.
