have a look at these links to see what the new version is like.

According to the new version, it has more photos than the original, and it also has a supplementary volume with the memoirs of various people who attended it, the seating layout, surviving costumes etc. I've never seen an original version of the book and I don't know anyone who has seen one either.

hi
That's how I got to see the reprint before I got my own copy
I actually couldn't find the original because I didn't search the french and Russian original title, till you posted the cover of the original.so I found that only because of you:)
You can actually order prints of the originals from NYPL !!

Yes, I know. It's very tempting, but at $30 a print plus postage something you need to think about before doing, and if I remember right their overseas postage costs aren't pretty. A real shame they don't offer a simple reprint service instead of trying to sell you expensive framed pictures.

Looks like you can view the reprint in the rare books room.  However, the entry mentions that it's "Kept together with original copy (Album du bal costum̌ au Palais d'hiver) in lockcage."  Don't know if they're referring to the actual original there, otherwise, there should definitely be an entry for it as well.

I just saw this. :-) Good to know they have an original copy, even though it probably can't be viewed.  I have a membership, am familiar with the protocol of using the rare book room, so I'll have to check it out the reprint sometime.  I don't know if I'd ever buy the reprint, but I know I wouldn't buy a copy that expensive without viewing it first.
