Greetings all, this is my first post here.
Something I've always wondered about: Both times Karl tried to regain the Hungarian throne, the reason Admiral Horthy gave for refusing to hand over the crown because the Little Entente would have attacked Hungary. I don't think Horthy was bluffing, and I don't think he was power hungry himself (he didn't really act like it, as far as I know.) So it seems that Horthy's fear was a genuine one.
Given that Karl did not start the war, and also given that he was the only one to actively tried to stop it, it was obvious that Karl was not the type to go off and attack other nations. He would have posed no threat to his neighbours.
So, why were they so hostile? Was it general anti-Habsburgism? Latent anti-monarchism springing from socialism? Something else? A combination of all of the above? It is a bit of a mystery to me.
