It's my understanding that when the revolution broke out basically no one rose up to support Karl. I've always found this odd. Why were there no groups supporting the monarchy?

Yes, simply click on them and they appear very nicely. I suppose the little boy on the pictures must be Archduke Otto. It's simply not to believe that somebody, who still knew those old times is still living in our modern world today. It's more than fascinating!
Thank you for the nice pictures. I have never seen them.

Otto, who was born in 1912 is, to my knowledge, the last representative of the older generation who lived at the beginning of XXème century.

He seems to have inherited his extraordinary longevity of his mother who died at 97 years although he currently has 96.

Sadly the crown was stolen by a trusted servant as they left Austria. Where did The Empress live in Canada please?

Hi Norbert,

The Empress lived in Quebec City and was often a guest for tea at The Citadel there with the Earl and Countess of Athlone, who were Governor-General and First Lady of Canada at the time.
She also visited Quebec City in 1954 and with the Cardinal Archbishop of Quebec, toured St. Patrick's School for Boys, where I met her briefly.  I told her that I had an aunt named Zita, named after her - she seemed quite pleased!!

Amazing that you met her personally! Did she make good impression on you, as a person?

Hi,

Yes, the Empress Zita did make a good impression on all of us boys.  We were told that it was not necessary to bow but I did and about a half dozen of us did and she 'noticed approvingly'...  She spoke to most of us and was presented with some spring flowers by the Monseigneur of the school.

She was a slight woman, not as robust as some of her photos show.  She wore a long black dress with black lace attached and a small strand of pearls.  She had a golden bow brooch with an upside-down watch attached;  she said it was a gift from the Pope, although which one I don't know.

She only stayed about a half hour.

I had actually forgotten about this meeting until she died.  I felt very sad.
Anybody visiting Vienna, I always tell them to stop off at the Capuchin Monastery and say 'hello' to Zita!!  I think she'd like that...

Hi Larry!

I only discovered this thread now and was fascinated to read about your meeting with Empress Zita in 1954. Thank you so much for sharing your memories of that most interesting occasion.

Cheers,
GREENOWL
