TN did have a habit of being stand-offish, mostly due to her shyness and the fact that being royalty--being "above it all"--was natural to her. Therefore people took her to be haughty, proud, etc; she certainly could be but tried great lengths not to be as she was desperate to have friends and have people like her and think she was nice, pretty, etc.

I find it easy to understand that Tatiana may have seemed snobbish, but I don't believe she intended on seeming so. She may have wanted to have friends, but she or any of her siblings probably never really got a chance to socialize with people thier age, and therefore she more than likely didn't really know how to make friends. She was use to being treated as royalty, and acting so around other people her own age probably irritated them.
On the subject of her nickname of "The Governess", maybe she didn't want the responsibility that GD Olga should have taken. ???
