I am shocked that this book is going for so much! Is it a particular version that is so expensive? I have a softcover copy from 2001 which I got no more than 6 or 7 years ago for under $20.

I have a fetish about getting a copy that was printed in the original publication year.  So I always have a hard time getting an inexpensive copy.

I did, however, get my copy for about $50 USD and I think I got it from a Danish bookseller.  It is hard cover, 1964 edition, with a reasonable dust jacket.

The one that was toughest to find was Olga Romanov - Russia's Last Grand Duchess by Patricia Phenix.  I had to get a 1999 paperback which is not in great shape, but at least I didn't pay a lot for it.  It is ex-library, but I don't think it was read much, so aside from being a little soft and brown around the edges, it is all right.  I don't remember what I paid, but I have seen it for as much a $200 USD.  And that is just crazy.

When querying on e-bay, do not just put in the title of the book.  Look under 'royalty'.  Last year I was looking for this particular book as well, and found the seller did not list it by the title.  I looked and found it was this very book and no one else was bidding on it and I was able to purchase it for $15.00.

Not that I'm aware of. The paperback reprint edition seems to command prices nearly as high as the hardcovers. My guess is that it's simply become too scarce to satisfy the demand.

I had a similar experience on BookFinder, though in this instance it was due to a typo. By hunting by author instead of title, I discovered a $40 copy of Prince Michael's book listed under "Nicholas and Alexander: The Family Albums" at a time when the majority were selling for upwards of $125.

I was very fortunate with my copy of the The Last Grand Duchess. My copy was £1.25 ($3.00) from a charity shop! It was a first edition and even had its dust-jacket.

Like others have said, if you are vigilant and check book selling sites and stuff regularly enough you can get lucky and find an affordable copy.

Aloha all!

Resurrecting this thread from the attic (?!?) - I found that I have two copies of "The Secret Plot To Save the Tsar' New Truths Behind the Romanov Mystery" by Shay McNeal.

I'd be interested in trading this book for another (preferably Romanov or British royalty related) - any takers?

Denise, The Family Albums by Prince Michael of Greece are many times for sale at ebay. The Bokhanov book I think you must be lucky someday. This book is one everyone want, but never gets. So I think that if you email: Van Hoogstraten in the Hague, you will be more lucky to have a second hand of this book, then waiting for ages someone put his/her copy for nothing on this thread.

Bokhanov's Love, Power, and Tragedy is not unattainable. If you're willing to spend $40-60 USD for a used copy, there are almost always a few available here:

Aloha all!

I just purchased a "like new" copy of "Love, Power and Tragedy" for about $53.00 - it was on the Amazon.com site - the U.S. site.  I believe they had several at the time I ordered mine.

I just received it last week - it is excellent and worth every penny and more!

Just "bumping" this thread up.

It tends to get lost and it is a great thread.

Denushka_89  There are a great many out of print book site stores on the Internet.  Just Google out of print books and you will find dozens of places to look for the books you want.  And the books don't even have to be out of print for these sites to have them!

eBay isn't the only place to get great values on books.
