Michael Jayston

I have just heard that Michael Jayston died on or before Feb. 20. Apparently there was one short line about it in a newspaper. Can anyone verify this or provide further information?

Arleen,

He was the beautiful actor who portrayed Nicholas II
in Nicholas and Alexandra.

He starred as Nicholas II in the 1971 movie "Nicholas and Alexandra".  And I thought he did a great job in the role.

Janet, how very sad...I've looked at several news wires, and the BBC, there is nothing to be found.

I haven't read or heard of it myself; a very reliable fellow AP member sent me a private e-mail during the weekend, and I only just retrieved that message earlier this morning.

My newspaper usually reports such things, so I was surprised not to have seen it.

I should add, as I just e-mailed another AP poster, that I found Michael Jayston's portrayal of Nicholas so convincing, not only in physical resemblance but in manner and tone, that I've often had difficulties keeping them separated.

Michael Jayston was a superb actor whom I remember from several series (especially kids programmes) not only Nicholas and Alexandra.  He had a wonderful voice and I think did lots of voice overs - the word melifluous comes to mine.  My father saw him on stage several times and always felt he had great talent.

If he has died then he's a great loss, I really hope that, pace Noel Coward, "rumours of his demise are grossly exaggerated" (it was NC wasn't it?).

That is a *very* well-known quote belonging to Mark Twain.

Janet, I'm so glad to hear that someone else has experienced the same difficulty.  ;) What an inspired job of casting. Have often thought that Michael's close association with this role, may have prevented him from achieving the career heights he obviously deserved.
Somewhat like the "Oscar curse" .........

There's no announcement to be found, not even on the IMDb-site. If it's true its really a great loss. So sad never to hear that beautiful voice again. Great actor!

Still haven't found any references, on the web or elsewhere. Would like to think we could apply Mark Twain's famous comment.

In addition to Michael Jayston's superb work as the last Tsar of Russia, some years ago I also enjoyed his portrayal of Mr. Rochester in a British television production of Jane Eyre.
