Gilbert's Royal Books is supposed to have the English version of these memoirs published this spring. I read that they provided a small publisher in Russia a grant in 2003 to publish the first English edition of these memoirs (which were previously published in only French and Russian), and Gilbert's will be the sole distributor of the English edition outside of Russia. The book will be called "Memories in the Marble Palace."

Zakharov Publichations in Moscow has printed the book again in Russian.  If you speak Russian, Zakharov has a large set of excellent memoirs from the late Imperial period.

Not a very good law - in the west - copyright laws are much tighter and for longer extensions ... the US Congress will certainly pass another law in the next few years to extend copyright -things from the 1920s remain in copyright, for example.

So let me ask this:  If this book is considered in the public domain in Russia, but is still in copyright in the US, then can a book legally published in Russia be sold in the US without royalty payments being made to the copyright holders?

If it can be, then this is a shady practice, and I would think that no reputable publisher would take advantage of such a "loophole."

A grey area, Penny, that a copyright lawyer could answer better than I.    However, I believe that Russia has become a signatory to the Berne Convention - which is the major treaty for international copyright - -for example, a French author is accorded copyright protection in the US and vice versa.  (The Soviet Union had bad rep as a copyright pirate).  The minimum protection as allowed under the Berne convention is the life of the author plus 50 years.  This appears to be the Russian form, so in Russian, Gabriel's book is out of copyright .. but in the USA, UK, and elsewhere, the copyright is longer.

The first edition of the book appeared in 1955 in New York, in Russian (izdatelstvo imeni Chekhova). Second edition in 1993 "Logos", St. Petersburg and "Goluboj vsadnik" Dusseldorf. 288 p. Newest edition, Zaharov, Moscow.
