Grand Duke Gavriil Konstantinovitch
« on: February 26, 2005, 05:50:40 PM »

   HI,

Why he was the only Romanov Prince to advance from Prince to Grand Duke?

   Regards

I don't know if he was close with Kyrill, but he became a Grand Duke during Kyrill's "reign" (not literally of course, he just claimed to be the reightful heir/tsar), but if they got along well I wouldn't be surprised that Kyrill "paid" him back with the title. Certainly Gavril had no legal right as far as I know, no more than the rest, anyway, but since there was no real tsar to nominate new Grand Dukes, I frankly doubt of the validity of his title. Comments please?

I think the title was given to him by Vladimir Kirillovich in 1939. As for its validity i dont know, but Vladimir was head of the family...

I beg your pardon, obvious mistake :P But it doens't change my opinion, the question is: Why Gavril? Why no one else?

Vladimir just used 1911 idea that senior great-grandson in each line can be promoted to Grand Duke. Other than Gabriel was in opposite to Vladimir.

Whose idea of 1911? I've never heard of that promotion, I doubt Alexander II would have opposed such an idea had he lived!

I'm not exactly sure how many princes there were at the time but perhaps if he wanted to exercise some perogatives Gavril was a good choice since he was non-controversial and seemed to get along? The sons of Xenia & Sandro most likely wouldn't have been included because of their parents' feelings towards Kyril's claims and thus Vladimir's. The same with Peter's son as Nikolasha (his uncle) had always been the favorite of some other exiles.

A photo album I keep of princes killed in action during the wars.
Started just by accident and now is a constant search.

One never knows ! I do not have those books. The only Golden nook I have is RELATIVELY ROYAL. For some reason have just not got around to any others-yet.
