Empress Marie's 1928 funeral & crypt in Denmark
« on: June 23, 2004, 09:00:16 PM »
There is a link:

http://www.jp.dk/indland/artikel:aid=2485966/

which contains a photo of her crypt along with an article (in Danish unfortunately). Also, information that her crypt will be available for viewing from now until the end of Sept along with a small exhibition of funeral photos and icons. Anyone live near Copenhagen who can visit and post photos?  ;)

Very interesting, Ella. I've often wondered what various royal/imperial crypts look like.

I knew if I searched I wouldn't need to start a new topic  ;), but does anyone have any additional pictures, besides the one in the link above, of the Empress' funeral, her crypt, or any guests attending at the time.  Many thanks in advance!

The crypt in which the Dowager Empress rests is not accessible to the genral public.  It can only be accessed by her family, or guests with prior authorization by a family member.  I visited this crypt in 1999 with a great-great-grandson of Maria Feodorovna.

They've been making a special exception to the 'no-viewing' rule, but it only runs to Sept (I'm not sure if that's 9/1 or 9/30) so it's ending soon. Anyone who lives near there should make a beeline! It's probably being done since she will soon be reinterned in Russia--perhaps as a way for the people to say goodbye to this Danish princess who has lain in her native country for so long?

The remains of the Dowager Empress are to stay in Roskilde until September 2006.

Perhaps it was opened because the planned reinternment had it's date has been in such a state of flux?  Maybe the viewing period will be extended since she'll remain in Denmark longer?

Hi, Redlow53 (Lise) was kind enough to send these absolutely fascinating photos to me so that I could post them for her. They are great! Many thanks for sharing. [All the captions are Lise's that she sent me unedited as I know nothing of any of this myself!  :) ]

1. picture: Empress Dagmar in her coffin in 1928 at Hvidoere before the memorable service in the Alexander Nevski Church, Copenhagen. The church her husband had build to her honour about 1880 - 1885.

2. picture: Before the funeral service at Roskilde Cathedral from left: Prince Aage of Denmark (son of prince Waldemar), Prince Kirill of Russia, Prince George of England (later King George the 6th), Prince Waldemar of Denmark (brother of Dagmar), Prince Harald of Denmark (brother of King Christian the 10th), Prince Gustav Adolf of Sweden (later King Gustav Adolf the 6th). Between Waldemar and Harald you can see Prince Frederik (later King Frederik the 9th) our queens father.

3. picture: One of the last pictures of Dagmar. She is on her way to the Alexander Newski Church. She got help from one od her two faithful lifeguards, who followed her from Russia and stayed with her to her death.

I searched high and low and this is the closest I could find..after all The Imperial Family has 24 pages of topics!  I digress; given the fact the MF will be moved back to St. Petersburg to finally rest with her husband, has there been any mention of plans on the side of the Russians to honor the last Dowager Empress?  I was reading one of grandduchessella's posts, and saw pictures from the funeral, and it got me to wondering whether she would be buried like Nicholas II and family, or whether all of the pomp and richness of the service would be real and not fake.  Perhaps I need to clarify.  I recall that the lettering on the tombs of Nicholas II et al. was not really gold lettering.  It seemed that then government kind of got around the money issue by using cheap imitation.

I am hoping that the reburial will be full of pomp and grandeur, but I am not expecting it.  I would appreciate anyone's views on this.  Thanks in advance!

As she has already recieved a full religous/state funeral with rites, the re-internment should be rather a blessing ceremony. This is my take on things.  Saying that, RO   "little blessings" can be quite inspiring as well,.

I don't know, this is creepy. I say leave her alone in her home country to rest in peace.

I think that the funeral protocol of the Maria Fyodorovna should be comletely the same as for the Mariya Alexandrovna, wife of the Alexandra II, because she was Empresse when she died.

As for Nikolay, it was some difficulties with protocol, because he was not Emperor when he died.

This link is to a description of the Empress's 1928 funeral service from a loyal follower of Grand Duke Cyril who he called "His Majesty."

Interesting reading.
