These are great pictures of MF thanks very much. Empress Marie is one of my favorite Romnov's i have even gone to the extent to like her side of the family her father, mother, and siblings.  The Glucksburgs in general.

what i am a bit confused is that i am to understand that her family is related to the Hesse from her mother's side but i am to understand that all royals are realted one way or the other so was her family realted to the Romanov's one way or the other?  and why is there not any mention of them when almost all royal families have been mentioned even to the Romanian royal family.

i also think she and Alexander III make more of a good couple than his brother Nicholas.  Is there a biography on him and Nicholas II brother George?  and more pictures of them as well.  I cannot see many pictures of George i see of Micheal but not of him.

Thanks for posting all of these lovely pictures of Marie. I like seeing pictures of her in her youth, as I haven't seen too many. I think she was really very pretty as a young woman especially.

I have always thought it interesting how Alexander didn't even like her that much in the beginning, and the only thing they had in common was mourning for Nicholas. Yet they developed a strong love and devotion for each other, and had a generally good marriage, so much so that one would never have thought they weren't deeply in love from the very beginning.

Oh my goodness!!!!!!!! :o :o :o :o  She was GORGEOUS!!!!!!!  What a pretty young lady!!  Boy, she really does look like Maria Nikolaevna, and I think I even saw a slight resemblance to Tatiana in one of those pics with the way she was smiling.  And I think I see a bit of a resemblance to Olga Nikolaevna in that second picture in Brian's first posting.  Cool! :D

There are very few photographs of the family before Alexandra married the Prince of Wales as they were just too poor for it. There are some sketches but one book printed a photo of Alexandra, Dagmar and Thyra with a pony that was labelled as the only photo of Alexandra as a child. There were slightly more of Dagmar once she hit her teens as the family gained in stature and she entered marriageable age.

The short one on the right, who has short curls. The taller one is Alexandra

Oh, thank you for posting that, Ella!

Ashanti is correct, the taller girl with the longer hair is Alexandra.

Ella,
Yes, please post the version of this picture that you have. It is such a rarity to see pictures of MF as a child, that I would like to see that one as well!

Well what book or publication is the one you have seen in? Perhaps it is just a reverse print of this image or this is a reversal of that one.  Perhaps you could post it.

I will take a look for it. It was from one of the magazines commemorating her death in 1925.

I don't think Maria Fyodorovna was all that beautiful. 'Cute' maybe, but not stunning like her sister Alexandra.

REALLY?! :o  I personally don't think Alexandra was even very pretty.  Perhaps her beauty is dated like Ella's.  MF on the other hand has that look of her future granddaughter, Maria Nikolaevna.  I think she's stunning--much more so than her sister Alix whom I don't consider pretty.  But that's just my little opinion.

Queen Alexandra was absolutely gorgeous. She seems to have a 'presence' in photographs that Maria Fyodorovna doesn't.
