Cannot decide whter she was pulling his ear or running a finger down his cheek.

It looks like he might be feeling a bit intimidated by this august and indomitable presence, and she's trying to coax him out of shyness with a gentle touch to the cheek.

Alicky was not close to Minny, so might affect their relationship.

I read in a Norwegian newspaper's "In the news 100 years ago" notice that some time during the summer of 1915 Dowager Empress Maria Fyodorovna had visited (then Austrian, now Ukrainian) Lemberg / Lwów / Lviv, that had just fallen to the Russians, together with "her granddaughter Grand Duchess Olga". Could this be correct or did the report mix up Olga Nicholayevna with her aunt Olga Alexandrovna?

Anyway the report said the pair went around shopping almost unnoticed and made themselves understood in French.
Берёзы севера мне милы,—
Их грустный, опущённый вид,
Как речь безмолвная могилы,
Горячку сердца холодит.

(Афанасий Фет: «Ивы и берёзы», 1843 / 1856)

That would be Olga Alexandrovna. She was mature, The Dowager Empress' daughter, and relatively free to travel. Olga N. was just nineteen, studying for nursing, had never traveled outside Russia without her family(even including her grandmother Minnie), and her absence (or this trip) has never been mentioned in any IF writing, diaries or letters.

But interesting newspaper item, I must say.A little "war tourism"?
