I read somewhere that Thyra`s hair turned grey at once in a one night after she had been told of her son`s Georg Wilhelm death in a car-accident.

Is that physically possible?

I think it is--that's the story on how Barbara Bush's hair turned grey. Her daughter Robin died as a young girl of leukemia and supposedly the next day BB's hair was grey.

Fascinating.  I wonder what the medical condition is?

I found a self-portrait of Maria Fedorovna. She painted herself in a diary of her future spouse Alexander III.
Very funny and touching picture.

There is no medical condition that can cause hair to change colour. None.

Although people may have differing opinions to her abilities as a mother, I have never heard a disparaging word with regard to her duties and how she used her position as Tsarevna and later as Empress. For me that is the reason I feel so for her.

One last question... When NII was crowned, did MF wear her coronation crown or did she wear the new one made.?

Thanks svetabel, what a perfect image to post here. Maybe some one can translate the little poem or whatever it is above the portrait.

As for Thyra's grey hair. Her hair was pretty much totally grey long before Georg Wilhelm's death. So I dont understand how that could be. Thyra just inherited the grey hair, along with a majority of her looks, from her mother. Louise greyed fairly early as well did'nt she. Minny and Alix must have got their father's hair gene.

Thank you.  I did wonder but not being very medically minded and a bit dim to boot, I didn't want to question the origin of Thyra's greyness too much.
Good question about the crown.  Anyone know?  DOMOVOII, maybe you should start a separate thread?

You think that Thyra was prettier than Alexandra as an adult?

I haven't really seen a whole lot of pictures of Thyra and Alix together......could someone post a few?  But from the ones I've seen, yes, I do think she was prettier than Alix.

I just looked at the pictures of Christian IX's family in the Danish Royal Family section, and I have to reaffirm my statement that I think Thyra was actually much prettier than Alix (at least in those particular photos).

Great pictures GDElla.  Few women could wear those complicated styles from the 1870's as well as Alix; your photos show that quite clearly
And Michelle, it's up to you whom you prefer.  Thyra doesn't interest me much but Alix does, hence my partiality.

Yes ella I had never seen the top one with Thyra in it. I have seen the ones with just Alix and her mother and father and sons, but never with Thyra. Could you tell us were you found it please. Thyra looks great in both photos I think.

For me it is too hard to compare Alix and Thyra, because they looked so different from one another in my opinion. What I like to do is compare the physical appearances of Thyra and Minny, (after all this is her thread). I think these two looked the most a like, they had the face shape and structure of their mother and looked just like her all except for the eyes, they had their father's eyes, while I think Alix is the spitting image of her father with the eyes of her mother. Anyways as far as Thyra and Minny I would have to say..... Minny. While I think Thyra was quite beautiful she was just not quite as pretty and I do not care for her eyebrows. And as for the prettiest or most attractive of all three I am going to have to agree with the masses and say Alix. Thyra definatly aged better than Minny, despite the solid grey hair.
